社会心理学では有名な「沈黙の螺旋」理論がある。
多くの人は自分が多数派だと思えば人前でも持論を開陳しがちだし、逆に少数派だと思えば黙る傾向にある。
では、どうやって自分が多数派か、少数派なのかを識別するかと言えば、メディアや他の人がどんな意見を発しているかによってである。先ほども言ったように、多数派は饒舌に、少数派は寡黙になりがちなので、その認識によって多数派はますます饒舌に、少数派はますます寡黙になっていく。
つまり、多数派が実態以上に多数派だとして、少数派が実態以上に少数派だとして認識され、それがさらなる饒舌さと沈黙のスパイラルを生んでいく…という話。
