For Dem leadership, policy is a means to an end. They have their positions on certain policies because they think itll help win elections. Regardless of if the policies are good or bad.
To me this is backwards.

How about we shut down the government for this very popular and specific goal and then, hear me out, we hold out for like a month and a half and then, ok this part is important, after a watershed election where we ran the table, ONLY THEN, fold and don't get the one thing we said we wanted.

Im sure from Schumer's perspective he thinks he did a good job. People blamed Repubs for the shutdown and the Dems did well during the elections.
But all it shows is that the Dems dont actually care about anything other than winning elections.

the thing about “democrats should take popular cultural positions” is that what constitutes popular is a function of an interaction between the public and elites. if a faction of elites start screaming about a vulnerable minority and another faction says they have a point, this shapes the public.

Some higher ed organizations who are loudly circling the wagons against federal funding cuts were oddly silent or circumspect about the earlier attacks on CRT and DEI.
