Gravity is constantly trying to pull your shoulders out of the sockets, it's not a great design. The trapezius is stabilizing the shoulder blade so that your shoulder joint in turn feels more stable. Strengthening the other scapula and shoulder stabilizers should help, but you should ask your PT :)
