High Desert Snowstorm with Joshua Trees, 10“ x 10“, acrylic on canvas. A few details + my limited (for me) palette. Happy w/the the lighter values on the Joshua trees in the background. Sometimes things turn out the way you intend. Based on a circa 2001 photo when I spent a winter working in SoCal.

Found this a day later—makes my point better than I did in 48 words:

First pass/rough-in. I usually do a LOT of under-drawing but this time, for whatever reason, I just started painting. Barely underway; much more to do—I think. No real idea where this one’s going at the moment. Kind of liberating, tho. #art #painting #acrylicpainting #landscapepainting #westernart

Guess who used up the last legal pad (and I use them up completely, front & back) right before a notary-public renewal training?

Birds planted sunflowers in our back yard a few years ago. Tallest one among this year’s patch toppled in high winds 2 days ago, so, a free, late-summer bouquet. Thank you, birds long gone, for flowers & the message: go make something beautiful that’ll outlive you. #art #artist #summer #colorado

Two paintings of the high desert in northern Nevada. Beautiful, lonely country with big weather and profound silence—just the wind and trickling water. Titles in the ALT text. #art #painting #acryliconcanvas #landscapepainting #westernart #nevada

Nighttime lighting in my studio/office is really yellow so the colors are washed out in this photo, but I’m happy with how this one turned out: “Exchequer Consolidated Mine, Winter,” 30”x30”, acrylic on canvas.

Haven’t painted much lately (too much going on at work) so this is my first finished piece in months: “Mine Buildings & Frozen Pond, Gilpin County, CO,” 30”x30”, acrylic on canvas. Who knows when this will be up on my website? Enjoy a tiny version here first… #art #painting #landscapepainting

“Autumn Basin, Colorado,” 20” x 20” acrylic/canvas. I love intense shadows that take time for your eyes to organize whatever’s inside them, whatever’s concealed—it’s usually a lot.

Most of Colorado dries out so quickly once the snow melts, I can usually only take moss photos in the early spring. Luckily that coincides with mushroom season.

“Gardner Lake on the Beartooth Plateau, Park Co., WY,” 10” x 10” acrylic/canvas. Rainy days at high elevation (10,000’ in this case) can make for tough driving/hiking, but they’re often great for painting.

“Rabbitbrush & Emigrant Peak, Park County, MT,” 18” x 24” acrylic on canvas. In MT for my sister’s wedding a couple years ago, her friends took me to a full-on Western movie-set they’d built. This is the view east (+1 of the set).

“Sunset on Nameless Peaks, Eastern Nevada,” 10” x 10” acrylic on canvas. Hike up a ridge before sundown; sketch/take photos; retrace steps in the gathering darkness. Rinse, repeat.

“Upper Forest Canyon from Trail Ridge, RMNP, CO” - 24” x 36” acrylic on canvas. SOLD, Pvt. collection. Commissioned piece; patron wanted a CO mountain vista in a more-realistic style. Photo’s lousy, but the paint is really thick. #Painting #Art #NationalParks #LandscapePainting #Mountains #Colorado

“Desert Playa & the Eugene Mountains, Humboldt Co., NV” 18” x 20” acrylic on canvas. I have spent more happy hours in the remotest corners of Nevada than just about anywhere else on Earth.

Not sure why but whenever I’m putting food in his bowl/refilling his water over the sink, my guy feels that’s the best time to slide on through and see what’s doing. Glad I’m tall enough/he’s short enough that there isn’t any significant contact with the uncomfortables… #dog #dogs #dogsofbluesky

“Heavy Skies Over the Aspen Range, Southeastern Idaho,” 12” x 20” acrylic/canvas. From a series I painted after a 2020 work-trip took me through WY, ID, & NV the day after a blizzard.

“Early Spring, Rio Grande Gorge above Pilar, NM,” 10” x 10” acrylic on canvas. Painted last year from a sketch I made back when my now-19-y/o was 6. Everywhere you turn, New Mexico is absolutely magical.

Scary for about 125 feet/3 seconds before the car (a Subaru) settled nicely. One of those times where lots of travel on rough roads for work (I build mountaintop communications sites) paid off. That, and the pavement was 90% dry. Snow/ice, things might’ve ended differently; it’s good to be lucky.

Beautiful drive for work between Moab, UT, and Denver today, despite rockfall and a blown tire on a narrow mtn hwy between La Sal, UT, and Paradox, CO. Still, I did pull over to photograph & sketch fairly often, so I have lots of painting to do. #art #painting #landscapepainting #colorado #utah

Great Basin Mining Camp, Elko Co., NV, 10” x 10” acrylic on canvas. NE Nevada is the quietest place I’ve ever been: no cars, no jets overhead—only the wind in the grass & my own heartbeat. Eerie & lovely all at once.

“Morning Fog, Yellowstone River, Livingston, MT,” 10” x 10” acrylic on canvas. Traveling this week for work so I wanted to use up some paint before it dried out; hence, this quick sketch last night.

Self Portrait w/Car, eastern NV, 20” x 20” acrylic on canvas. I don’t often paint plein air & have only one photo of me in action, so… I adapted it and added a car b/c… I can.
