High Desert Snowstorm with Joshua Trees, 10“ x 10“, acrylic on canvas. A few details + my limited (for me) palette. Happy w/the the lighter values on the Joshua trees in the background. Sometimes things turn out the way you intend. Based on a circa 2001 photo when I spent a winter working in SoCal.
Painted from a couple of photos taken in the El Paso Mountains, Kern County, CA, sometime Dec-Feb 2001 (date approximate). Birds planted sunflowers in our back yard a few years ago. Tallest one among this year’s patch toppled in high winds 2 days ago, so, a free, late-summer bouquet. Thank you, birds long gone, for flowers & the message: go make something beautiful that’ll outlive you. #art #artist #summer #colorado

Nighttime lighting in my studio/office is really yellow so the colors are washed out in this photo, but I’m happy with how this one turned out: “Exchequer Consolidated Mine, Winter,” 30”x30”, acrylic on canvas.
Looking up a steep slope to three mine buildings—two red, one green—with a snowy foreground and pine-forested ridge behind. Scaffolded stairs attached to a headframe form the left side of the painting. Sky is a brilliant, cloudless Colorado-winter blue.

Most of Colorado dries out so quickly once the snow melts, I can usually only take moss photos in the early spring. Luckily that coincides with mushroom season.

Rabbitbrush (a type of high-elevation sage native to the western US—known as chamiso in New Mexico) turns brilliant yellow in autumn. A large clump in the foreground contrasts with reddish grasses and the deep blue of 10,926’ Emigrant Peak on the skyline. Western movie-set near Emigrant, MT, with a steepled-wooden church and other false-fronted buildings at the foot of the Absaroka Range. Although 10,926’ Emigrant Peak dominates the skyline, it was hazy and pale due to forest fires burning in Idaho at that time (September 2022).

Scary for about 125 feet/3 seconds before the car (a Subaru) settled nicely. One of those times where lots of travel on rough roads for work (I build mountaintop communications sites) paid off. That, and the pavement was 90% dry. Snow/ice, things might’ve ended differently; it’s good to be lucky.
