Practice Manager, Director of @theigpm.bsky.social
Thanks to all of the #PracticeManagers that completed our survey, I don't know how #GeneralPractice can survive this when you see the numbers.

We want to pay our staff fairly, to do this the people that will lose out are #patients. We will have to reduce staff number to balance the books
Thank you to everyone that completed the survey on
Practice Index so that we could collect data on the #nationalinsurance and #nationallivingwage changes. The results are staggering.
Please share in your networks and encourage your colleagues across General Practice.

GP & Labour MP @simonforstroud.bsky.social speaks from his experience in #GeneralPractice about the urgency of the crisis in the profession.

“Continuity of care is a really important part of our job as GPs. The best way to incentivise this is to have a stable general practice.”

GP CRISIS
Summary:
Not enough funding, not enough GPs in work, GP unemployment, too much focus on additional roles at the expense of patients being able to access GPs
Cause:
Government & NHS England failure to prioritise patient care in the community

Being unwell is hugely challenging, it’s hard enough without the Govt making it harder

7% fewer GPs with 20% less funding (£/patient) to provide care
Closing local pharmacies & big chains leaving (Lloyds)
111 directs you back somewhere else
Hospitals blocked & fewer beds
Ask MPs for better

As GPs we are very familiar with supporting our patients when demands tip them into crisis

Sadly many GPs find themselves in this position, with increasing demands, little support & failure of leadership to listen & provide what’s needed

How many more leaving will it take?

Lessons from England’s National Health Service. Tldr: the UK NHS is in principle a great model but is now precarious, undermined by austerity and redisorganisation. Primary care is critical to the whole thing but is facing huge risks. www.nejm.org/doi/full/10....

The NHS in England has historically delivered high quality at low cost, but recently, its performance has declined. The challenges facing the NHS hold potential lessons for the United States.

GPs work for the NHS, provide services for the NHS, are paid by the NHS for 90% of income
This is a key & important difference with private healthcare providers
They are not shareholders taking the profit, they are the workers providing the patient care
