Oh my god -- and there is a whole thread here -- photos of old Lord of the Ring boardgame stuff, which is a treasure trove for pre-movie visuals of how people imagined things on their own

You're right but the problem isn't so much dilution is it's kinda misleading. It SOUNDS good. Like you do enough stuff and you realize what it's trying to get at, but at it's incorrect face value it seems SO straight forward.
I think show don't tell esp in the context of books is more about making the story unfold in front of the reader instead of being described in passing conversation, or showing who a character is instead of telling you he's good/bad/ugly. But yes the phrase has become diluted.

Like what is "showing" and what is "telling" is so misleading and books can only show you words. The texture and cadence and purpose of those words can be more ""showing"" than well.... Telling someone a description.
