The American Right fundamentally rejects the idea of a pluralistic, democratic society that does not award privilege to certain people based on race, gender, religion, and wealth. They reject the pluralization of culture, the public square, the institutions, and all spheres of American life.

“We are going to have to live here with each other” sounds good in a vacuum. But it reveals itself to be a remarkably naïve and/or disingenuous proposition as soon as we move from abstract notions of “our disagreements” to asking: What are we disagreeing over, exactly?

It feels like that part of the movie right now. I keep hearing it in my head, so I’ll write it here, for all of us: I know it may not be me. But we can try.

The person who says it does sometimes end up among the dead, but what matters is that it is said, and the group decides to do this. To attempt to survive as an act of love.
