After the credits finished rolling there was the Q&A, which consisted of Jonathan Clements (the chairman of the festival's jury) MCing, Koike-san himself answering questions and Bethan Jones (his interpreter) translating. I could tell Johnathan was very knowledgeable about Lupin, because he commented on how the gang didn't seem as close in TIBL as they did for the majority of the franchise, but admitted he could be wrong because "[he]'d only seen about a dozen Lupin films" - this is one of the few franchises where you can say "only" and "a dozen" in the same sentence! From there Koike clarified his quintology is meant to exist alongside part 1, when the gang have met each other relatively recently. Jonathan mentioned how TIBL felt very MCU-like, having a ton of backstory it needs to recap at the beginning and through flashbacks (it very much is the Avengers Endgame of Koike Lupin: an explosive finale to a decade-long story arc), which might explain why the atmosphere in the cinema felt a little... uncertain, though there were a few collective laughs in appropriate places and applause when the credits rolled. I wonder how many people there were only familiar with Lupin through Cagliostro or The First, or not familiar with it at all - TIBL would be a MEMORABLE introduction to the series, that's for sure. (tiny spoiler) Q: Were the credits inspired by Cowboy Bebop? A: Not deliberately; the illustrations in the credits were originally done for the first four OVAs Q: What inspired Koike to create his version of Lupin, and what does he want people to take away from it? A: Koike always loved the Osumi episodes of Part 1 and The Mystery of Mamo, so he always wanted to create a version of the series that recaptured their feeling, but he also respects for Cagliostro and loved getting to work with Kazuhide Tomonogo, whom he considers his senpai, on TIBL. What he hopes people take away from his Lupinverse is the "grown-up" relationships between the characters, with them gradually growing closer Q: Just for fun, how long was Goemon on the ceiling for in Zenigata and the Two Lupins? - this was Sof's question I asked for him, and it made Koike-san laugh which was a proud moment for both of us! At first Bethan seemed to misinterpret the question as "how HIGH was the ceiling Goemon was on" but I was able to correct her and reword it; ultimately the answer was "about half a day"(!!!) Q: What inspired Koike to go for a more sci-fi feeling with TIBL, compared to Part 1 where stuff like Pycal's "magic" had a grounded explanation? A: Koike wanted Muom to be an enemy who was extremely imposing, but not IMPOSSIBLE to defeat, so he and Katsuhito Ishii made him even more of a larger-than-life character than the previous antagonists. Also, apparently it was Ishii's idea to put Muom in chaps Q: Did Koike ever meet Monkey Punch? A: Yes, once, just after completing Jigen's Gravestone - he loved the movie and said it was cool A few other smaller bits: someone thanked Koike for coming all the way to a country where his Lupin OVAs aren't easily accessible and hoped for Scotland Loves Anime-branded physical releases, but Johnathan couldn't confirm or deny anything. Koike also mentioned that while TIBL concludes that specific story, he'd love to return to Lupin "if they'll have me"

the PLAYBOHZ #LupinIII zine organised by the awesome @tabbiewolf.bluestripedboxers.com is out!!! here's a SFW edit of my piece for it (be warned the zine itself is very much *N*SFW). it was incredibly fun to use kintsugi as a metaphor for healing while also giving you some samurai eye candy 🤩

Fujiko's Lie is generally considered the weakest of the original trilogy and it's obvious why: it's the only one where Goemon doesn't even have a cameo 😔 it's far from bad though - Bincam is a fun dark subversion of the "monster discovering their humanity" trope

I don't know what the future holds for the series, but I do know I'm grateful for the time I spent, the artistic skills I developed, and the friends I made in the decade this strange, imperfect, beautiful series has existed - and that I'll still treasure them in another 10 years. お粗末さまでした!
