The Western Kingbird is generally an unusual bird to see here in NJ, This one is a juvenile, with its bluish-gray head and back plumage still coming in, contrasting with a white throat and belly. It bears a heavy flycatcher bill and slightly longer wings and tail than its eastern counterpart. They love to hunt for insects in open fields lined with hedgerows, perching on outer branches and taller objects within the fields. Observed at Edwin B. Forsythe NWR on Nov.24, 2025.

This little trio of nestling Eastern Wood Pewees with their bright yellow bills and gapes was taken in June 2020, located high up in the crotch of an oak tree branch in our SNJ yard. They are so young that their eyes are still closed, and wouldn't open for another few days. The nest was successful.

This Golden-crowned Kinglet paused very briefly on our old apple tree, with its gnarled, swirly, rough bark - a great place to find tiny prey hiding. They are tiny, busy birds, with their golden-yellow "crown" bordered by black. On th e males, there is a patch of bright red nestled in the gold which can only usually be seen when they raise their crest a bit. SNJ; Nov. 2014

🍽️ Perfect night for some comfort food. Chicken Cobbler with a biscuit topping and lots of veg.
Chicken Cobbler, basically a pot pie filling with about three cups of bite-sized pieces of rotisserie chicken, carrots from our garden, celery, onion, peas and chopped green beans. The sauce includes homemade stock, butter and flour, thyme, sage and parsley from the garden, salt and pepper. The top is a basic buttermilk drop biscuit, baked until crispy on top and fluffy underneath.

This little hen Ruffed Grouse entertained us while we rented a camp in Maine on Moosehead Lake last October. She's sitting in a Spindle Bush, aflame in bright red and bearing tasty berries in pairs. She and her mate visited for most of the week we were there.

Datura stramonium, a.k.a. Jimsonweed, Thorn-apple or Devil's Trumpet has a pleasantly fragrant white, elongated, trumpet-shaped bloom, which belies is high toxicity when ingested. In the United States, the plant commonly known as "Jimsonweed" (or, more rarely, "Jamestown weed"). This name derives from Jamestown, Virginia, where soldiers sent to suppress Bacon's Rebellion in the English colony of Virginia reportedly consumed the plant and spent eleven days in altered mental states! This is a picture of it's dry seed capsule, a very spiky, 4-chambered body about the size of a ping-pong ball, and is filled with black seeds resembling little chunks of charcoal. Taken in Cape May, NJ.

Whoa. Needle in a haystack search! Hope you find it! We were in Cape May last October and this leucistic Blackpoll popped up in a red cedar right along the road in the state park. It's crazy when that happens!

This large ball of white fluff is an American White Pelican at rest. Its long yellow beak is nestled along its back, with just a sleepy eye, rimmed in bright yellow, peeping out. They are one of America's largest birds.

Pictured is a Gadwall, a type of duck. It has a black bill, a solid black butt, and in between the plumage contains various shades of brown, tan, gray and some russet along the back. The flanks are very finely lined in black. You can just see a bit of the bright yellow foot. The water is reflecting the bright blue sky above.

For this week's theme of angles, I choose a photo I took in 2021 at Longwood Gardens in PA. We are standing inside a structure called The Grotto, looking out through a diamond-pierced window made of cement. Looking out of the center of the window is some of the sculptures in one of the many fountains in this section of the extensive gardens.

Pictured here is a late-summer visitor to our yard. This bog, lemon-yellow butterfly is a Cloudless Sulphur, pictured with its long proboscis inserted into a brilliant orange Tithonia (Mexican Sunflower). These are migratory butterflies and some favorite foods for their caterpillars include Senna and Partridge Pea. The adults nectar on a wide variety of blooms. Taken in S. NJ. in early September (still summer here!).
