I am a Dentist and an Oral Medicine Specialist, looking to spread awareness about chronic medical conditions that affect the head, neck, and jaw!

And because that’s not nearly enough nerd stuff in my life, I also love history, sci-fi, and old boats!
#OMCase1 update!

I suspected the patient’s symptoms were mostly caused by myofascial pain caused by multiple dental procedures completed in a short timeframe +altered occlusion. We sent her to PT with an emphasis in craniofacial exercises and dry needling to break up the persistent muscle knots

lol I post for the first time in more than a month and somehow lose followers. Apparently I’m more popular when I don’t post? I’ll be honest, I don’t get social media.

108 followers?! Man I need to stop neglecting this account and actually post something worthwhile! I’ve had some fun cases and updates so looking forward to it!

I thought it might be interesting to go over some cases I see in Oral Med, so here goes: I have a patient, in her 50’s, very healthy, who was referred to me with right sided pain and “tightness” she had implants placed but her symptoms didn’t start until after her implant crowns were placed.

I keep seeing this same dishonest trick where someone says the evidence for water fluoridation is mixed, point out that other countries fluoridate differently, and then fail to point out that the common thread is that systemic fluoride, regardless of delivery, works. 1/

Can we make a petition to change “Burning Mouth Syndrome” to literally any other name? Please it is the most over diagnosed condition I see and it leads to people failing to get answers or treatment for a very intrusive condition!

My mother was diagnosed with H.Pylori in March and was given antibiotics. She had lost 40 pounds since November and was terribly nauseous, but we were all hopefully she was going to finally feel better.

And at first she seemed to be...

This was my Mother, Darlene Myers. Though she was my stepmom, she always treated my as her own daughter. We fought like only family could when I was a teen, but we really grew close. This was her holding my son in 2019, she was so happy to finally be a “Mimi.”

I love medicine and I recognize that there are a number of factors that can impact patient and doctor interactions but we as a profession have to do better. So many women and POC are just not taken seriously even when they do seek out care. And terrible things happen.

As a fan of history and of medicine I will forever advocate for vaccines. They are the reason we can have 5 kids and be reasonably assured all 5 make it to adulthood! Most people against vaccines are lucky to never have lived in a world without them.
I can't figure out if vaccines work or not.

Tough one. I can see why RFK Jr is so concerned.

Need Sherlock Holmes on this one.

Shifting from TMD, let’s talk Trigeminal Neuralgia! This condition is frequently overly diagnosed because of its very generic name—which literally translates to “Trigeminal nerve pain.” However, true TN has a very specific presentation that looks very different from other oral pain conditions

So many people making the argument that their ancestors came to America “the right way” conveniently forget that for the majority of our history all you had to do to immigrate was come over and not bedying of an infectious disease. Talk about pulling the ladder up after yourself.

Why I love working as a oral medicine specialist: building trust with my patients and helping them find strategies and treatments to manage their chronic conditions so that they can focus on living again! Time and time again I cannot believe I get to do this as a career!

Good oral health care is important for all ages. That is why we support preventive measures like community water fluoridation and routine dental care to identify and address problems early before they become more serious - and expensive. #teethmatter

TMD Fact 1: Ear pain, ringing of the ears/tinnitus, and even dizziness/vertigo can be symptoms of TMDs! Due to how close the TMJ and supporting muscles are to the ear, the ear have referred pain as well as inflammation pressing on it from the inflamed TMJ or its surrounding capsule! #TMJ #TMD

Oral health in care homes is very often poor, overlooked & residents access to dental care non-existent.

We are currently conducting a NIHR funded trial (the SENIOR trial) in care homes in Wales, Northern Ireland & England to test whether #dental skill mix can improve resident’s #oralhealth

Most providers hate working with patients suffering from chronic pain conditions. But they’re some of my favorite patients! Being able to be a resource and a support for these patients and helping them negotiate a complex condition to improve their quality of life is the best part of my job!

Did you know that TMJ really just stands for Temporomandibular Joint (basically your jaw joint?) Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are actually a collection of conditions that can impact the jaw. This is why there is no “catch all” treatment that works for everyone.

My biggest pet peeve as a doctor? Having other doctors tell patients that there’s nothing that can be done.

Don’t ever accept that, the answers are out there. Find a provider who is every bit as determined to find them as you are!

I love giving talks about a number of conditions that are frequently misunderstood in the medical and dental communities and I’m looking forward to using this lovely new platform to help spread awareness of the specialty that I am so passionate about!
