But it’s Scarborough. So it’d be down a 5 lane road (that’s, generally, underused for its size) where people drive too fast. No way I’d feel comfortable biking that, but the world would end if there were a bike lane here.

The difference in surviving being hit by a car going 40 or 50km to 60 or 70km is going from probably surviving to probably dying. The reason why road are 40 or 50km is because there’s other users of the road who aren’t in cars. So, yeah, going just a little over the limit is a big deal.

I know they’re illegal, but so is speeding so what does it matter at that point?

Overall, though, if you don’t want to get a ticket from a speed camera you could just not speed. But apparently that’s too difficult for people, so I’d also suggest getting one of those license plate covers so the cameras can’t read your plate.

I also heard the argument that the cameras increase accidents because people slam on the brakes. That’s ridiculous because it means they were already speeding and also if you think that’s bad, something like speed bumps would be infinitely worse.

But redesigning streets is expensive and who can do that in this economy, lol. Also, redesigning streets takes years from start to finish. We need something in the interim.

Now that the cameras have been installed, the speeds have lowered significantly and most people go the limit or slightly above. The limit is 50km, too, not 40km where it’s often is in Toronto. This is a big Scarborough 4 lane major street. I’d love for it to be redesigned to slow traffic.

Cars used to whip down my street, often going 75+ in a 50km zone, especially at night. Before the cameras, I complained to the councillor and requested that police monitor the area for traffic violations, but the councillor said that wasn’t his job to advocate for.
