It astounds me that people don't understand that the same Income to some people, means a different lifestyle to others.
If you own a house, you don't pay rent. Maybe mortgage, but that allows better credit rates for everything else.
If you don't care for others, costs are lower.
I could go on.

Definition of Wealth "a large amount of money or valuable possessions that someone has".
dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/e...
If a person does not HAVE a large amount of money as their costs (including tax, rent, care for others, living, etc) meet near their income, then they don't have "wealth"

Is it time for a wealth tax?
Ahead of the Budget, could a new levy on the rich be an essential tool in fighting deprivation and wealth inequality, or would it prove unworkable?

They're not "unproven".
You just don't like me mentioning them. I'm saying whether it is a "big" salary depends on the person's situation. Which is just a fact.

It was already tough then my dear
November 14, 2025 at 12:12 PM
It's alright, there are some good experts out there advocating this already, including a LibDem leader yesterday

And it has always seemed ludicrous to me that we don't have a clearer lower price for basic energy, then higher rates the more you use (barring medical etc needs)
November 14, 2025 at 12:11 PM
Exactly. Isn't an option for many of us
November 14, 2025 at 12:08 PM
I was a near that a few years ago in London; haven't been recently
November 14, 2025 at 12:08 PM
We don't know, and I have no proof, but have had the impression that some do. I live in more rural England where things are a bit more "old school"
November 14, 2025 at 12:07 PM
I agree, & we are in a frustrating place where the system has spent on unneeded things (Michelle Mone and more, low tax on the wealthy, MNCs, fossil fuels, banks), but not where needed.
Like many, I'd rather we concentrate on increasg taxes on highest earners & land owners, Banks, Fossil Fuels, MNCs

Well it has been for some of us on a month to month basis.
Welcome to other peoples worlds

That's Salaries.
3 other categories where people "earning" less than that do well:
1. Wealth: Own homes or more, don't have to pay rent or mortgage
2. Those cheating by taking cash; an issue HMRC reports on itself
3. Many Ltd Co owners live off more from biz but "earning" looks less
November 14, 2025 at 12:04 PM
Again, I have come across far too many professional tradespeople, store owners and more who seem to take quite a bit of cash. I don't remember who; often I don't know their names, details, etc to even think of reporting them; no proof.
But annoys me as I pay my taxes; & some live better than I do.

I guess the Qn is how trivial it is if some struggle to have enough to help elderly (#ageingpopulation ) stay warm, free from damp, have half decent living space, enough food, healthcare, etc; then are supposed to also save for own home, etc.
But yes, saving/frugality, a healthy challenge of life!
November 14, 2025 at 12:01 PM
Well, this is a healthy conversation.

I guess the big bit is the huge cost of buying a home, and for some of us, the huge costs of caring for our elderly as UK basic pension and housing support just does not meet living costs.

Earning is not the same as wealth, AND doesn't take into account that there really are 1000s of trade professionals who still take cash at times, sometimes v often.
£80000k is decent, yes, but not amazing if you don't own a house, have no other income, are on single Y, & pay all costs, esp caring

And hence the many, many voices about the struggle to live in London and especially given London rents...
Are you listening?
November 14, 2025 at 11:24 AM
Not if you have to rent something not mouldy or a shoe box in London
November 14, 2025 at 9:17 AM
Totally disagree
November 14, 2025 at 9:17 AM
No surprise unfortunately. And another reason to avoid big brand McD etc or cheap/unknown source fast food
