"It's your fault," she kept chanting. Again and Again until I woke up with a gasp. The first thing I saw was Kavish's face right next to my bed. He leaned over and hugged me. "Shh, everything's okay, Mini, you're safe." I pushed him off. "I'm okay," I grumbled. "You woke up screaming, Mitali." "I was just screaming because, uh, because I realized I'll be late for school. So, I should probably walk there now." I tried to get up but he stopped me. "You do know you talk in your sleep, right? Want to talk about what happened?" I suddenly felt very embarrassed and vulnerable. What did I say in my sleep? "I'm fine." "I'm driving you to school today." "I said I'm fine, and didn't you say you don't have enough time to do that? You're too busy with work. You couldn't even eat your dinner. How can you drive me to school?" "I'll be a little late, but this is more important." "I said I'm fine. Why won't you just leave me alone?"

What would Tara do? I know, I thought. I grabbed my phone and pretended to have a fake conversation out loud. “Dad? What? An emergency? Wait, what, what’s going on? Is grandma okay? She got run over by a car?! I, I’m in the middle of P.E. class, if only I could come see grandma!” The whole gymnasium stared at me with puzzled looks. “You’re not even holding a phone,” someone next to me said, pointing at my empty hand that was miming holding a phone up to my ear. “Oh,” I said. It was worth the shot, I guess.

And I, well, I was just trying to get myself to think rationally, like I used to, but all I found was a burning tornado of anger at everyone — at humans, in general. It felt justified, to me. Everything they did to the sylvans, […]. It felt justified to hate them. All of them, as a general group. …but that made me no better than them did it? Being angry at humans in general just because a group of them did something fucked up. I knew it wasn’t right, but I still found myself getting angry at anyone that crossed my path, and, reflecting on it, most of the time I couldn’t even make any sense of it. It was like I was on fire, and everyone that talked to me, or even looked at me, got burned.

But there weren’t any explosions or gunshots or any smells of war. No, just the echo of war. Just the remains. It was September. 2008. I looked down again, at myself. At my tattered, dirty clothes. At my shoes so broken that it might just have been better to take them off entirely. You’d think that a three year war that caused so much suffering finally coming to an end would lift everyone’s spirits. Make them smile. Make everything better. Make you believe in hope again. You’d think. Instead, everyone just looked like empty shells. Just like the blown up city. The worrying didn’t stop; there were just different things to worry about now. Everything felt so empty. Especially me. I hated feeling empty. I survived, despite everything, I made it through. But what now? What was I even meant to do when I had no one? No one at all. Survive. What else? And then survive and survive and survive.

Do you ever think about how fast moments can happen? How fast things can go from peaceful bliss to absolute fucking rock bottom? Yeah, well, me neither. Not until now. Click. The locks opening as the keys jangled in my hands. “Samantha.” He didn’t yell it, didn’t shout it. But it sounded so deeply angry between his gritted teeth. Like the name hurt to even say. And his face. I’ll never forget to look on his face. Disappointment. Anger. Hatred. And then, as if time instantly unfroze, he marched up to me and grabbed me by the collar. “Do you have any idea what you just did?” I was done hiding. Done making myself smaller. Done putting out that fire. So, I looked him straight in the eyes and said, “Yeah. I freed myself.” He let go of my shirt. “Fuck, you’re so naive, Samantha. Freed yourself? FREED YOURSELF?! You might have just signed your death wise, maybe ours along with it.”

Screenshot 1/2 from my WIP: War, flames, blown-up buildings. Loud explosions and the sound of piercing gunshots no one could ever forget. Separated families trying to find a piece of themselves, some grieving because they never will. My ears were ringing with desperate cries for help from moms and little kids. There wasn't a single building or person left unscathed from the carnage. I could feel the mountain of rubble underneath my broken shoes as I tried to step forward. It was hard to see in all this smoke, to breathe, to think. I felt like I had been running forever, trying to find something I'd never find. Something already gone. Home. I just wanted to go home. A flash, then another. An explosion. I realized what I was trying to find. Mom, Dad, my brother and his stupid smile. Where were they? I tried calling out for them, shouting with all the might left in my body, but nothing happened. All I saw was the same destroyed city that I used to call home, because my parents weren't coming. They were already gone. That's when I heard the second explosion. Screenshot 2/2 from my WIP: I stumbled, feeling hopeless. Then I saw her. A little girl with two curly black braids and a tattered, dirty dress. She smiled at me gently. What was her name again? She seemed important, but I couldn't quite remember. She was gesturing for me to follow her, so I did. She ran quickly across all the rubble, even though the soles of her shoes were just as broken as mine. We passed several more explosions, gunshots, and cries, but the girl just kept running. I could smell the distinct acrid smell of explosions, a mix of burning buildings, chemicals I didn't know, and a sharp ozone smell. It was suffocating, stinging, but I was used to it by now. I tried to keep up with her, but I couldn't. I tried, really. By the time I caught up with her, I could already tell it was too late. I tried to warn her. I tried to run over to her, maybe to push her aside, to save her, but it was like an invisible force was keeping me there. I could only watch. I could only watch as the bombs, as the explosions, descended on her. She was smiling at me the whole time, never losing hope. The loud sound of the bomb finally impacting startled me and I fell, just as I heard another explosion going off in the distance.

I love this whole scene where we really get to see how close Sam is getting to Mitali.

Breakthrough? I actually managed to somewhat maintain a writing schedule, writing at least 2k words every day. Sadly broke the streak yesterday, but hopefully I can continue it today!

“Nothing seems fair right now, but then again, I have it so lucky compared to others.” Lucky? His situation seemed like it was the opposite of lucky. Living through a war, then living on the streets with no home. Finally finding a place, a house, only to potentially lose that too? I don’t know if his definition of lucky was different than mine, but… Which made me realize, well, shit, I’m lucky. For all the shit in my life, at least I have a house, food, all of that. And yet, I was actively pushing my luck, arguing with my uncle, practically egging him on to kick me out, thinking I could take it. But I had no idea what that was like. Not having a house, not knowing when my next meal was. Who knows if I could even survive that? I grabbed his hand and held it, squeezing it tightly. “You’re not going anywhere.” He gave a slight smile. “That’s a nice thought, but it’s not really realistic.” I hugged him. “Please. Don’t go anywhere.” He hugged me back. “I’ll… try.”

Writing session update.

It's official. I've hit 150k words on draft one — my planned wordcount. I still have 10+ chapters to go, so I guess we'll have to see how long it will get.

This feels pretty big.

At that moment the console finished loading. Emil selected a racing game. It was at least better than a fighter game. He pulled out a spare third controller from under his bed. I wondered if he had a backlog of them under there and what else was hiding, but it was probably better not to look. He gave me the spare dusty one under the bed. We all selected our cars. Emil picked the one with the best stats. Mitali picked the weirdest looking car that was available and I just clicked "Random". "Ready, Set, Go!" the speakers of the TV sounded. I don't think Mitali actually understood how the controller worked. He was just pressing every single button again and again. Emil, meanwhile, was pressing all the buttons with precision. He spent all summer playing these games, it was no surprise really. I went with the slow and steady wins the race strategy, minus the wins the race part… or the steady part.

The house was dark, the floor cold, a cool draft coming through the windows. …and it was empty. It was so empty. I slumped against the frame of my bed. Well, not really *my* bed. Was anything truly anyone’s if it could be lost in just a second? *Breathe*, I thought. I tried to ground myself. Think of something. Anything else. Like Sam, and her smile. Covered in dirt and leaves, with flowers in her hair. The river. Her spot. Our spot. Just think of her and only her. It made me smile, if only momentarily. …but then I looked around the dark, empty room. Why did everything good come at such a big cost? It didn’t feel right. Feeling happy with everything that was going on. I shouldn’t have been feeling happy. Not when my brother wasn’t there. Why did I smile and laugh when he wasn’t even there? I pushed myself further into the bed frame, slowly slumping down, until I collapsed fully onto the floor. …and then I closed my eyes, because it didn’t feel right anymore.

"Yes! Yes! Yes! Let's see the little chickens and the cows!" said Amabel. "Okay, then, if you insist. We already fed them. And the chicken eggs have to be taken first thing in the morning. The chickens get grouchy if you don't take the eggs soon enough." We entered one of the coops and it was filled with boxes for nests. There were lots and lots of hens there, clucking around, and some outside too. Betty told me I could pick up on the hens, holding her to my chest, as long as I didn't squeeze. She helped me do so. The chicken's feathers were really soft. Amabel told me that hen was called Daisy, and it was her favorite. It was a big brown one. We went to the barn, which had two fences. Bernard said it was so that when you entered the cows wouldn't escape. They allowed their cows, like their chickens, to roam around free-range, and I could see them grazing the fields. Bernard grabbed a key from his overalls and unlocked the first gate, then locked it when we were inside. He opened the second one. "The cows are very friendly. You can pet their necks, just be slow and gentle as to not startle them," said Bernard. Amabel went up to one of the cows. "I'll show him how!" She asked her Mom to pick her up, so she could reach the cow's neck, and started petting it happily. Even the cow looked content, its eyes looking happy. With Bernard's permission, I went up to another cow and stroked its neck, which I wasn't expecting to be soft.

"How do you do it?" I suddenly asked her. "Do what?" she said. "How are you so confident in yourself? I only ever act like I am, and everyone buys it, but you know how shit it is on the inside." She flickered her eyes. "I'm not always. And it took time, it wasn't instant. You know I struggled so much in high school, right? I was, like, the complete opposite of confident." "I know you didn't exactly enjoy high school, but I don't know, you seem really confident. Like, actually." Untouchable. Tara always seemed so untouchable. She chuckled. "Didn't exactly enjoy high school? That’s the understatement of the fucking year, Sam. God, I felt like I was so ugly and just not worthy of anyone there. I mean, I was fat, my face was covered in acne… Let’s just say that most of the other kids weren’t exactly kind to me. And you know, I was loud and, unlike now, it wasn't treated as a positive thing of me being confident. It was treated like I was a nuisance. So, I made myself smaller. It's not the same, not at all, as what you're going through, I know, but when I see you look at all your... Sylvan features like that, it takes me back. I wished someone told me back then that I was enough." "You're like the prettiest person ever. And you always have been." I wasn't trying to flatter her; it was just the objective truth. "Well, obviously. I know that now."

I wasn't sure where I was. Everything was dark and unclear. Until she tapped my shoulder and said, "Li, what's wrong?" The room came into focus. All of Amara's crafts hanging from the ceiling and filling up the shelves. I was curled up in the corner. I knew why I was there. I was thinking about Kavish. How he was probably gone too, like my Mom and Dad. "I know you said we'd find him. That your Mom would find him. But I don't think she will." "Your brother? Of course we'll find him! Mama's talking to all the soldiers she comes across, she's asking all about him. We'll find him any day now." In an explosion, I thought. Covered in bullet wounds, I thought.

Home. When was the last time I heard that word? For the longest time, we had been living both everywhere and nowhere, always on the move. It was mostly abandoned buildings damaged from the war that we deemed safe enough to stay in, but sometimes we'd sleep in our truck when we ran out of options. It's not like I was complaining. We were lucky. Still, I couldn't help but miss the warm feeling of our old home. It wasn't really about the house, but about everything that happened inside the house. As soon as you entered it, you were met with a positive, warm feeling, and it was as if it was telling you, "You'll always be safe here." I remembered watching TV with my parents on that old couch, snuggling in between them, under a soft blanket. I remembered the smell of garlic and chilis from Dad's cooking. Board game nights with my parents and Kavish. Hugging Mom when she finally came back from work. The goodnight stories, the constant chatter, and the laughs. That was perfect. I had already made up my mind. The house in the village wasn't going to be home. Nothing ever would be. The only way I could go home again was if I could go back in time seven years ago.

I glared at her, shaking my head, trying not to burst out laughing at her incoherent thoughts. Flipping over the sticky note, to the side that had a small strip of stick to it, I wrote down, in pink glitter, "Yes, I've been replaced by a copy. The real Sam is being held captive. Get her back for 1000 slices of toast?" I handed her the note, watching her eyes scan my words. And then, the most unexpected thing happened. She started crying. Like, fully crying. Thinking about it, I don't think I've seen her cry much. I guess we just don't cry much in this family. She hugged me, still sobbing, while I stood there a little confused. I whispered in her ear, "Why are you crying? You do know that it was a joke, right? I haven't actually been replaced by a copy." I mean, you never know. Just to make sure. She laughed, but it sounded a little strange through the tears. "Of course not. You're Sam. The real deal." She hugged me tighter, and then grabbed a new sticky note, writing down in perhaps the clearest writing I've seen her write, although it had to take up four separate notes (which she handed me in a cluster), "I'm just so, so proud of you Sam and I guess I'm getting a bit emotional. […] No matter what happens, I will always love you. All of you. Sisters forever, right?"

I saw that most of his things were already packed. With my curiosity suddenly piqued, I quickly grabbed the few things I had left here — the tattered blanket, an old, dirty pillow, some cans of food, the few school books Kavish managed to find for me, three battered notebooks of mine, and Teddy. I packed the small things in my backpack, draped the blanket over my shoulder, and held the pillow in between my other arm. Once we finished packing, which didn't take long, we left the abandoned building we'd been staying in. Standing outside the old building really put into perspective just how bad things were — not that I needed a reminder. There was no denying that the building looked sad and lifeless. Still, it used to be someone’s home; a family once lived here. It was the place where they cooked delicious meals, making the entire building smell like spices. The place where they laughed and smiled together at the dinner table. The place that, no matter what, was their home, where they could always be safe together. And then the bombs hit. If there’s anything after death, whether it’s reincarnation or something above, I hope the family is safe now. And my family too.

(Pictures from Pinterest) Short Pitch: One fateful night at the library Oliver finds a small, worn blue book about the stars and soulmates — with a little note sticking out of it, wishing the reader a good day. Hesitantly, he decides to leave a second note. What follows is a chain of notes between two boys talking about everything from the stars, the vastness of the universe, and fate. Over the course of several months, Oliver finds himself wondering if soulmates are real and if his happens to be hiding in the notes between pages.
