UC Davis. Developmental drivers of individuality in the Amazon molly. Nature through nurture and a lot of noise. Really into random effects. Hard no to autocrats
You may have heard that the UC decided to cancel the Presidential Postdoc program, a decision which lots of folks found incredibly short-sighted. But we just got an email from UC Pres Milliken that the fellowship program is back, baby! (at least for the time being, but hey, it's something)

Your last saved meme is your moral philosophy

(Hell yeah it is. Always but especially now)

Visiting the University of Bern and so delighted I finally get to meet the cooperatively breeding cichlids (N. pulcher) from the Taborksy team I've been reading about for years in person. It's like meeting celebrities 😍

Oh hello, tenure! Who knows what it'll mean in this future, but I'm still damn proud & so so grateful for all the work, support and pure luck that got me here. Starting a lab during the pandemic (& pruittgate) def left an indelible mark on me, so I decided to make it visible to everyone else too ❤️🐟

Spent the weekend at Lake Almanor in airplane mode and what's the worst that could happen if I just never came back?

That snarky grant reviewer throwing some maaajor shade my way. But hey, thanks for telling the funding agency they can expect high impact papers from my work 😆😆😆
August 12, 2025 at 4:16 PM
Okay, reviewer 2, easy does it. I'm not sure this *should* be the article that impresses you the most, but I appreciate the extremely positive Monday morning vibes 😍

What has been your POSITIVE reviewer 2 moment, folks?

It's time like these it feels even more radical to celebrate our wins! This degree is way more than just three new letters behind your name

HUGE UC Davis contingent at @standupforscience.bsky.social Sacramento! Here's just some the folks from our dept alone

It only took 5 years, but @danielbolnick.bsky.social and I were *finally* able to meet in person this weekend at the ASN conference. No spiders in sight but many beers were had and many more are on deck 😆🍺

Ha! I don't know, pigs that steal laptops do seem to be a major threat IMO 🤣

We went to Hokkaido, Japan to see these guys last year and they are the size of a fire hydrant

Hell yeah, cryostat has *finally* arrived. If you haven't tried it, sectioning brains is the perfect meditation to forget the current state of the world.

Hands down the best part of lab retreat was that my team surprised me with a custom version of Bohnanza (my all time fav game). Each person designed one card. It's amazing and they're amazing and it's just what I needed! 🥰❤️😭🐟

(Ten billion thank yous to @alltheperkes.bsky.social for organizing!)

Ended up being perfectly timed that our lab retreat was scheduled for the week after the election. We hoped we would be celebrating, but instead spending the weekend with kind, thoughtful, and hilarious humans making plans for forward progress was the best medicine. Plus wine. And lots of games!

UC Davis isn't exactly known for our football (though our team is doing great this year) but we are known for our vet school! So no surprise we have a very well trained pupper that retrieves the kicking tee at every home game ❤️

New lab pics just dropped. Amazon Warrior team looking fine and fresh for fall 2024! 🐟😍

Good file management means don't overwrite your files (unless you have version control software/storage). I love the 'date method' - always 'save as' your files and add the date in YYMMDD format at the end. Keeps everything in order and lets you recreate any changes you've made.

The biggest gift you can give Future You is good file management! Use consistent folder naming practices and get in the habit of creating a README file in your project folder that outlines where samples are, the data METADATA, who did what parts of the projects, and where to find all the files.

Mistaken identity! Laura Ryan shows that from a shark's perspective, man, do surfers and swimmers sure look a lot like the shark's typical pinniped prey #ISBE2024

How does risk of predation alter mating decisions? Viraj Torsekar shows bigger male and female isopods try to get the safer burrows forcing the smaller (less competitive) individuals to settle for risky burrows. Alters patterns of assortative mating! #ISBE2024

@Jordan_SMartin presents data supporting his Social Drive hypothesis. Feedbacks between fluctuating selection and social interactions promotes social plasticity. Tsimane women fertility better predicted by social interactions and IGEs than direct genetic effects #ISBE2024
