UC Davis. Developmental drivers of individuality in the Amazon molly. Nature through nurture and a lot of noise. Really into random effects. Hard no to autocrats
You may have heard that the UC decided to cancel the Presidential Postdoc program, a decision which lots of folks found incredibly short-sighted. But we just got an email from UC Pres Milliken that the fellowship program is back, baby! (at least for the time being, but hey, it's something)

Our new paper offers an explanation for the universal law that "under carefully controlled conditions.... an animal behaves as it damn well pleases." We explore how stochastic mechanisms may play an underappreciated role in generating individuality. (1/7 🧵)

As someone who lived in Europe for six years, this is so true. Easy access to (sufficient) public transit, (sufficient) unemployment benefits and healthcare are seen as the bare minimum that the government is meant to supply to its people. I would like to see it as the bare minimum here too.
"Europeans recognize his vision about free public transit and universal childcare. We expect our governments to make these kinds of services accessible to all of us,” said Verbeek. “We pay higher taxes and get civilized societies in return."
Europeans recognize Zohran Mamdani’s supposedly radical policies as ‘normal’
