In 2014 I worked with a group of year 7’s making glass poppies to commemorate the outbreak of WW1.
I remember how shocked they were by the photos I showed them of
boys so like them, all in uniform, leaving for France. Some lied about their age to recruiters
one soldier in the trenches was just 12

To have a life where i get to have spring sowing of seeds twice a year is a very very fortunate thing, i never forget that x

I have never in my life slept in the afternoon before I started living here. Not every afternoon even now, but it has become a habit, that snooze after lunch (which is now at about 2.30pm) there’s a stillness that descends if you let it and the warm afternoon air covers you like a blanket…

#inktober day 14 'Trunk'

The memory of an Oak is written within
Unseen til death
Memories of
sunrise and sunset
hard winters
dark summers
gentle rain
plenty and drought
More changes than our memory ever holds
And now
We trace those years with our fingers, touching history we can only imagine

#inktober day 12 'shredded'

I have never had a cat that didn't love a bit of freelance shredding, the maniacal expression and the high speed dash round the room afterwards are particularly pronounced in our current grey princess

Oh and exhibit A on the right is my armchair…🙄😬

Bid the fern sing an emerald song
While the trees walk in procession along.
Spider,spin a wreath for his head;
In gossamer garland the delicate dead.
Wind, wait and mourn him as you pass, And with slow steps make musical the grass.

#inktober day 3. 'Crown'

Inspired by a poem by Annie Finch, Mabon Crown

extract:

Here is my crown
Of winding vine,
Of leaves that dropped,
That fingers twined,
another crown
to yield and shine
with a year’s
fermented wine.

the half finished stage is on the left, I almost wish I’d left it there

Lunchtime stroll in Clissold park. I used to bring Tam here in his pushchair pretty much every week when he was tiny. It’s still lovely, and still full of families out on a Sunday ❤️

It is a truth universally acknowledged ( or it should be) that an illustrator up against a tight deadline will STILL obsess for over an hour over tiny details…😬😉

This years Christmas card design

The wren, the wren, the king of all birds
On St Stephen's Day was caught in the furze
Although he was little, his power is great
So up with the kettle and down with the plate!
