It’s been a frustrating, scary, exhausting day on so many fronts, so I’m just gonna post some of my dahlias. This new hobby has been a lovely bit of joy in my life this year.

This guy let me hold him like a teddy bear when he wasn’t sleeping on my head. And he told us about his urinary blockage in time to get him to the vet to save him. He told us about the cancer too, but it was faster than we were. Absolutely no question he loved us and his canine siblings.

SAME! I grew five last year, and they did so well I put in 30 more this year. Have already ordered about 15 for spring. I’m constantly plotting where I can add beds and pack them in tighter. This is my haul from a few days ago.

I grew these dahlias and finally got a contractor for some necessary house repairs.

This simple is from a Smitten Kitchen cocktail recipe, but it makes a tremendous mocktail with Fee’s Black Walnut Bitters, Fee’s Molasses Bitters, and ginger ale. Measure as your soul dictates- pretty sure you can’t go wrong. Garnish with lemon or orange peel.
Winter Warmth Syrup 1 1/2 cups water 1 cup raw, demerara or turbinado sugar (granulated will do just fine if you do not have them) 1/2 apple, peeled, cored, and diced 1/2 pear, peeled, cored, and diced 12 walnut halves 3 cinnamon sticks, broken up 6 whole cloves 1 whole nutmeg. Make the winter warmth syrup: Combine all ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves, and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from the heat and cool. Strain into a clean glass bottle, cover and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks. Makes about 2 cups.
