A really great piece by my favorite tech journalist:
Protests, mass meetups, conferences—a youth-led movement is reclaiming the Luddite mantle, rejecting a future dominated by Silicon Valley companies, toxic apps, and generative AI.

This fall, a "Luddite renaissance" is in full swing.

I hate that the ugly racists are being so emboldened now.

I hate that we have to learn these lessons the hard way, again and again and again.

Being mixed race is a whole other bag of fun.
over long experience of both the UK and the US my view is that - as a white-skinned Ashkenazi Jew - I am not "white" in the UK/Europe and become "white" somewhere over the Atlantic on my way to New York.

(possibly I become not-white again crossing into certain states?)
nothing drives home just how much race is a social construct than people crossing from one system to another, even in places as superficially similar as the UK and US.

Lord, the anxiety from watching the trailer for Project Hail Mary.

I love that book. I'm not sold on Ryan Gosling in this role (he's all right but just not quite this character) & I don't 100% trust a team willing to drop that spoiler so casually...

Strong week for pigeon news.

Strolling by HMS Belfast & saw a man with a splendid hawk on his arm. Had to ask and the man said the hawk was on his way to work. & what line of work was this hawk engaged in? I enquired.

'He's in pigeon control.'

Say what you will about London but it's never dull.
I've been working on researching my other half's geneaology and when he gets home I've got to break it to him one of his ancestors was taken to court for stabbing a man in the hand after an argument about pigeons.

Downloading our photos from our St. Cuthbert's Way walk and laughing at this pic my other half took of me. On the final leg to Lindisfarne, you have to cross a highspeed railway line. There's no bridge or underpass so you have to call a signalman from this little booth and get the OK to cross.

Just home from a week hiking St Cutbert's Way. Eyeballs fizzing with all the beautiful scenery but it was the little history museum en route that made me smile most of all.

We’re proud to announce, today’s turnout has already surpassed the Hands Off protest! Over 5.5m people and counting across the U.S. Get out there, be seen, and be counted. This is history in the making. Take plenty of photos and videos and post them publicly. Let the world see what’s happening.

A US Senator was thrown to the ground and handcuffed by federal agents, and then the DHS Secretary went on to say that they are taking control from the "socialist" local government. That is fascist, there is no other proper word for it than that. No euphemisms are necessary or warranted.

Am in a hotel room.
Is today the day I finally try using the trouser press? Has there ever been a more intimidating bit of kit haunting hotel rooms up and down the country?

Every time I log on to social media these days, things feel so ugly and unhinged.

What a joy to have this speech pop up, full of grace & generosity, in among all the madness. Can't wait to read the book.
You can now read International-Booker-Prize-Winner Banu Mushtaq’s acceptance speech, in full, over on our Ampersand blog:

Fantastic ending to Baroness Kidron's speech in the House of Lords yesterday, which led to the government's defeat on AI & copyright.

Speaking the UK's creators: "Their property, their labour, is worthy of your protection - because apart from anything else, it is not ours to give away."
