Since both GA and HY5 can be transported from shoot to root, this begs the question of how this shoot to root transport is regulated and how GA and HY5 integrate their signalling. Exciting work for the future 😊

It turns out that a large part of the GA response is coming via HY5 (My favourite transcription factor). GA can increase HY5 levels in the lateral root primordium, leading to a reduction in lateral root growth. hy5 mutants, repsond less to very high GA4 addition!

We can modify and remove that far-red light response by applying GA to the shoot, and when we applied far-red light to mimic shading by plant competition, we detected increased amounts of GA in the root via a FRET sensor, GPS1 (from the lab of @xanderjones.bsky.social ).

Plants can perceive adverse light conditions, such as shading through far-red light, and change their growth.
Gibberellins (GA’s) are known to control cell growth in the shoot, but we show now that they can also act as a signaling hormone from shoot to root, and change root development!
