Increasingly, I feel as if, when these self-proclaimed coalition builders talk about "winning the middle," they're not talking about the people they hope to win over. Rather, they're talking about themselves, and defining what it will take to keep them in the tent. They aren't opposed to purity tests. They're issuing purity tests. You'd better be in favor of funding the police, or they won't be in your tent. You'd better be OK with the fact that they feel uncomfortable around trans people, or Black Lives Matter activists, or prison abolitionists, or any other group that demands universal human rights, or they won't be in your tent. And if we don't like it, we'd better speak low about it—if we want to be welcome in their tent, that is.

Jeramy finally has lap cats! Jiriki and Tabor love him, but they just don't sit on his lap. Both kittens have napped on his lap now, with Gideon seeking him out to do so twice already ❤️

Gideon's very food motivated and eaten most of any wet food or treats. Ekko isn't really into the treats we've tried so far, but does seem to like pets and snuggles. When she was exploring upstairs she treated me like "basecamp" and kept running back to check in with me and get a couple pets ❤️

Both kittens have tried attacking Jiriki's tail or pouncing on him and he pretends to be grumpy about it but clearly isn't. He also joined in their play session briefly, with Gideon jumping over Ekko in the tunnel and Jiriki jumping over Gideon jumping over Ekko 😂

Kittens are doing great! Cats are doing great! Everyone has free run of the house and aside from a few brief grumps things have been peaceful and fun for all.

It's only been about 24 hours, but Jiriki and Tabor are already getting much calmer at the presence of the new kittens (and they don't sit and stare at them obsessively). Tabor has already started indicating that he'd like to play with them.
A baby gate in a doorway separates two adult cats (one black and one gray) and a small black kitten. The adult cats are relaxed but interested; the black cat looking at the camera and the great car looking at the kitten. The kitten seems unsure but brave, right up at the gate but with her tail a bit down.

New kittens! Gideon and Ekko 😻 Tabor and Jiriki, resident eight-year-old brothers, are just starting to think they might enjoy having these little sisters to play with.

We were so near to a rose-breasted nuthatch! Needless to say, I rarely get such a close-up, even when I'm not walking the cats!
A dogwood shrub trimmed to a small tree shape has a black cat on a leash in a galvanized tub at its base, and a rose-breasted nuthatch clinging to a branch in the upper right. Cat and bird are only about three feet apart, though the cat hasn't noticed the bird and is focused on the catnip in the tub. A rose-breasted nuthatch on a dogwood branch, presumably just staying as still as possible since we inadvertently "snuck up" on it. The bird was only about four feet away from me when I saw it and took this picture.
