Not totally destroyed but would need fine soldering to fix it. It would have been soldered to that row of pads at the top, with adhesive just for reinforcement. To fix it you'd have to resolder it very carefully.

There's plenty of space in that plug for a couple MAX232s or equivalent btw and those cost a few cents each. It would cost so little extra to make this into a properly designed functional product.

Hell it's late enough that we had EDID by this point. It could be an I2C EEPROM for something like PCMCIA's attribute memory. They definitely aren't PCMCIA/JEIDA compatible though.

I can get a ML-8PC for (relatively) cheap since the unknown pins shouldn't depend on capacity directly, hmm... They might be a soft ID of some kind though. In my device they go to some GPIOs so could be just about anything (digital, so not battery monitoring).

I already have 95% of the pinout worked out from poking at the device I have, but I can only guess what the remaining few pins are for and don't have a good dimensional reference. I can probably make something that fits and works for *me* but if I'm doing that I feel like I should go all the way.

Frontend only works if the backend responds in a timely manner, backend is a single machine from 1993.
