I'm excited to give the talk - now just to rehearse and tweak. Super thankful (again!) for @hillemmalouise.bsky.social's collab on this, the attached cart of books, and Graham Dolan's Royal Observatory history website. Shoulders of giants, etc.

And I'll wrap up with some bibliographical work on what happened to the parts he didn't destroy (spoiler alert: he re used them!)

Of course, I'll talk about the fire which Flamsteed used to destroy parts of 300 copies of the book:

I should take this post to ULTRA shout out @hillemmalouise.bsky.social whose work on the 1712 HC is HUGELY important, and I've leaned HEAVILY on for this talk. We're collaborating on 2 (or 3?) articles about the book, watch this space. Emma is a GEM and I'm excited to highlight her work!

Followed by several slides (you'll have to attend to see them and hear about this) on the print run, distribution, and survival rates for the 1712 edition. It's shocking and illuminates new avenues for work on the book:

Then the fireworks start - literally - I unpack Flamsteed's objection to the premature publication of his uncorrected observations, and the argument that Edmond Halley made very public in the preface to the 1712 edition:

I've tried to illustrate the talk with primary digitized sources - I'll talk about the initial articles of agreement between Flamsteed and Newton, and the appointment of a Board of Visitors to the Observatory. (this MS copy from Newton's papers @theul.bsky.social ):

I'll also touch on the instruments he used (one of the ways Flamsteed improved the accuracy of his observations) and talk about his eye for detail in correcting error (he discovered the subsidence of the wall that held his mural arc, AND CORRECTED FOR THAT).

First, I'll lightly unpack what the book "does" - it's in Latin, and star catalogs can be... pretty dense. I'll unpack what I jokingly refer to as a "giant spreadsheet" of star positions:

We could call it… the BBC!
Startling stat (via Broadcast): fifteen greenlit UK dramas can’t currently get into production because UK PSBs (BBC/ITV/C4) can’t fully fund them, and international funders aren’t interested in UK-centric subject matter.

I've visited six hospitals this week.
I've actually seen more people in masks than I have in 18 months.

But most of the masks have been ones that aren't designed to protect against spread of airborne disease. They're not the solution.

We need to use the right tools for the job.
