@tkingfisher.com’s Goose Girl retelling is goddamned delightful.

There’s murder and intrigue and romance and a reanimated dead horse! What more could you want?

Taylor Jenkins-Reid delivers another emotional gut punch. The setting is the 1970-80s space program, and the premise is “What if the person you loved most were in danger 250 miles above earth and all you could do was watch and hope?”

My June reads were straight bangers, so I want to shout out the authors for #booksky

Talia Hibbert writes realistic disability rep and a swoonworthy MMC in a romance that is equal parts sweet and spicy

Idk about Neverending Story, I’m pretty sure Falkor is hanging out in my backyard

Genre: Romance

Well-written and funny, lots of A+ dirty jokes, but the side characters were all infinitely more likeable than either MC. Then, the FMC does something at the end that made me actively hate her and root against the HEA that the book rushed to.

Genre: LitFic meets SciFi

Complex main character with realistic disability rep, but frustrating that the MC doesn’t demonstrate any growth over the course of the novel, and the ending didn’t quite work for me

Interesting premise and an easy read, including commentary on sex work and power dynamics, but the POV shifts between first/second/third person really took me out of it, and the love story gave me the ick

Very reminiscent of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I enjoyed the story, but since the romance was so little of the overall book, I didn’t feel as deeply invested in it as I wanted to be

This book was hard to read (allll the content warnings) because it was unflinchingly honest. Complex characters, evocative writing, incredible all around

I love the Wayfarers series so much. This is a book for when your soul needs something hopeful

A lovely, sweet book about what we inherit and how we grieve and falling in love

Beautifully written and poetic, but both plot- and character development-wise felt like a short story that was stretched into a novel

Ohh, I wanted to love this so much. But I was so disappointed by how much of the plot happens to Bree in this book and how bad her decision making is on the rare occasion that we see her actually show agency.

Fun holiday romance with a solid mystery to drive the plot forward.

Would the MMC’s behavior have been creepy and obsessive IRL? 💯 Don’t care, still enjoyed it. That’s what Hallmark holiday movies are for.

Book about a man and the importance of stories. I know lots of bookish folks love this one, but the characters felt two-dimensional. I struggled with this one, even though it’s a quick read

Dystopian murder mystery that’s true to Turton’s style, which is heavy on complicated plots twists and turns. Enjoyed, but didn’t connect with the characters.

I thought the mystery itself was well-constructed! The author made a choice to have the tone be very fourth-wall breaking and meta-aware, though, which I found distracting to the point of being annoying

Interesting plot that really painted the picture of growing up in the Caribbean, but I wanted more character development. This was also the third book in three weeks that I read with (mostly off-page) SA as a plot device, and I’m just over it.

Representation of autism and anxiety within the bounds of a healthy relationship, we love to see it. This one also, though, had a baffling third act choice that seemed to both appear and resolve out of nowhere.

LOVED this. Grounded in Arthurian legend, voodoo, and modern day North Carolina. Addresses real-world issues while also delivering on the fantasy plot. Immediately ordered the second book in the cycle.

Sweet romance with a twist of a little magical realism. The vibe was Disney princess levels of sweet, but it matched the setting. I was onboard with this, but didn’t love a specific third act choice that knocked it down a star for me.
