I feel like that makes it (accidentally) better, that they chose such a needlessly cruel method to achieve a needlessly cruel goal. It fits the theme so well that I would assume it was a ham fisted allegory if a good author wrote it.

Even then, follow up questions:
Was anyone else's cake taken away or just theirs? Maybe they're upset at unfair treatment.
Were they maybe trying to self-regulate with the Switch? Maybe you should trust them to calm themselves down instead of making the situation worse on purpose.
