every time I’m in the field (on-site highway PE) I’m constantly paranoid of some jackass throwing a bottle or something over the Jersey barrier doing 70 in the work zone and then I meet God

One key that does open a lot of doors professionally is getting equipment certified - crane operator is the holy grail and would be difficult to get new to the field, but if you can show up with the know how to operate a skidsteer and forklift (or if you were really lucky, a loader), it’s a leg up.

Re: construction, trade school is a great way to learn the stuff they need for things like specialized carpentry, HVAC work, and electrician stuff. I would recommend avoiding residential (it’s construction’s Wild West), and typ. big commercial GCs are the most likely to not suck for queer folks.

I’d bet they’ve likely looked into this but something that may play into their strong suits if they’re a theater kid + want a trade is show rigging and IATSE work. I know several openly queer people who have good careers and interesting lives doing rigging, and Portland likely is a good spot for it.
