One qualification: the majority you refer to doesn’t see a lot of things at all. Would all of that majority think it worth the small short-term savings to the U.S. federal budget to let 150000 kids in Africa be born with HIV in the next 90 days? We shouldn’t assume constituencies are solid things.

The tariffs are scheduled to go into effect Tuesday, Feb.4. That leaves time to claim Canada and Mexico have met anti-immigration demands and back off while asserting victory.

“I hold that every American has a right to form an opinion of the constitution, and to propagate that opinion, and to use all honorable means to make his opinion the prevailing one…” Douglass did not claim that opinion beats law but understood that the two interact. Not a quick fix but a long game.
