Assistant professor at University of South Carolina. We love neurons and macrophages and SARM1. Neuroimmune interactions after traumatic nerve injury. Twiss lab, Giger lab alum.
Arrived in London, with the family in tow! Sightseeing and science, what can be better!?!

Grateful for the opportunity to share our work on Friday and to bring the kids to this wonderful city.

It has been 1 year since the lab opened its doors at the University of South Carolina. Looking forward to, hopefully, a long impactful career here. #neuroskyence #WomenInSTEM

We had a great time at the Carolina Autism and Neurodevelopment (CAN) research retreat yesterday. 2nd year PhD student Noah Leever gave a great short talk on his Sarm1 work!

Also if you don't know about the amazing work of CAN, check them out - it is quite amazing!

My kiddos are my number 1 fans. We had a paper accepted yesterday so they made me this sign.

Skytorial coming soon on our first major work on Sarm1 and PNS injury. 🧪👩‍🔬🧠 #neuroskyence #neuroscience

Gave our lab entry way a little update today. Nearly 1 year since we’ve been at UofSC and lots of great memories already

This #FluorescenceFriday we have adult DRG neurons cultured in microfluidics! Axons traveled through ~640um length microgrooves to the next compartment. Cyan is neurofilament. These were cultured/imaged by our super talented postbac, Jess. (who is looking for lab tech/grad positions in NJ/NY)

New York bagels in South Carolina!?! And out of a food truck so I know it will be good.

Now the question- toasted or untoasted? @mikefeigin.bsky.social

CHOMP, CHOMP! Check out this hungry macrophage for #FluorescenceFriday. Taken by our fantastic lab technician Julianna, following a myelin assay. Lipids in Magenta, Macrophage marker in Green, DAPI in blue.

My 10yr old made our lab a sign. She is #standingupforscience 🧪🧠👩‍🔬

Julianna representing the lab at the Carolina Autism and Neurodevelopment Center research round-up!

Main takeaway- remember your neurons do not exist in isolation! Think about their microenvironment too! Macrophages are our favorite non-neuronal cell to think about.

Cheers to finishing out the first academic year of the Kalinski lab at @sc.edu. Proud of all this team has accomplished in another, unprecedented year. Looking forward to a very productive scientific summer. #NewPI #WomeninSTEM #neuroscience

Never thought I would say this, but thank you reviewer 2! Fingers crossed we get some good news soon!

Practicing a bit of that self care I preach to my trainees about. Hoping a little nature and yoga will help me reset and finish this R01.

Even our neuronal cultures know how terrible things are right now.

Between doomscrolling and fighting for science we bake.

Happy Paczki day! Recipe from my favorite bakery in Michigan- Zingerman’s Bakehouse 🍩

And closed again tomorrow. This 1 inch of snow is causing havoc in SC. ❄️

Gave our first state of the lab address this week. I broke down the cost of science, from people to stuff. Dove into spending compared to budgets. Spent time on grant submissions and manuscript/project expectations for the year.

I want to be as transparent as possible & this was a great start! 🧪🧠👩‍🔬

Happy holidays from the Kalinski Lab! What a year we have had and I am grateful for this small, but mighty, team! 🧪🧠👩‍🔬

Okay less writing and more hiking has occurred and it has definitely been worth it.

Let’s see if these views will inspire some writing this week.

For this #FluorescenceFriday we commemorated the very first image of our first DRG cultured in the lab. Culturing these neurons never gets old 🤩

Nothing fancy here- just a run of the mill fluorescent scope capturing a stunning neuron stained for neurofilament. 🧪🧠
