There are some great, and I think intentional, graphic matches in the previous scene with Miyazaki. This one is from Totoro, which has a well documented rural Japan postwar subtext.

There’s a lot to like about the the Last of Us, but I esp like the image of the queer/nonbinary survivor at the end of the world.

It’s a non-natalist resolution. Ellie is surrounded by new growth, even as the punishing hetero-patriarchal world collapses around them. Hopeful.
