today is world suicide awareness day in NZ, and i wanted to use this time to encourage people to donate and raise awareness for their local mental health resources. please feel free to share resources you may know of as well.
Trigger warnings: Suicide (mentions of suicidal ideations and attempts) I’m writing this ahead of September 10 in order to give me something to look forward to. After today, I’ll keep looking for other things to look forward to and I’ll keep going and going and going. It’s quite frightening to open up about something as serious and personal as suicidal ideation and attempts. While there’s been some improvement on how we talk about and approach mental health in society, we have a long, long way to go. I don’t think I would still be here if not for the support of my loved ones and the free resources available to me that helped me with acquiring medication. But there’s a very big risk of these free services getting defunded by apathetic government officials, which will result in less people getting the help they need. I will provide a few links to donate to Suicide Prevention hotlines and resources for New Zealand, the Philippines, the U.S. and the U.K. A small portion of my wages will also go to donating to ensure that people who need help get it immediately. If you or someone you know if struggling with suicidal thoughts/ideations, just know that you are not alone. You are loved by the people around you, and I’m sure they wish to see you thrive and succeed. And while we’re on the topic; we cannot therapy and medicate ourselves from the very real causes of poverty and social injustices that make it difficult to live day by day. If you are able to, please donate, join demonstrations and protests, or at the very least amplify the voices of those fighting. Our struggles with mental health do not exist within a vacuum. I am very proud of you for surviving. And to my surprise, I am happy to still be here. Please take care.
