What EyeRIS revealed was incredible, fine-scale detail of the 3D movements of octopus arms as they crawled over the seafloor completely unconstrained. We learned that octopus crawl by creating a modified foot that persists throughout the behavior, a simplification that could aid roboticists. 8/n

After integrating EyeRIS on ROV Doc Ricketts, we had one 12 hr dive to collect all the data we could of octopus locomotion. Thanks to the incredible skill of @mbarinews.bsky.social's ROV pilots and ship's crew, we successfully observed multiple individuals exhibiting a range of behaviors. 7/n

The Octopus Garden is home to THOUSANDS of Muusoctopus robustus, exhibiting all sorts of behaviors (brooding, crawling, swimming, etc.) that we could readily observe using EyeRIS and @mbarinews.bsky.social's ROV Doc Ricketts. 6/n

It all started with a grand challenge: How can we unlock the potential for ocean life to inspire future technologies? @mbarinews.bsky.social's Bioinspiration Lab has spent years trying to tackle this problem, and we recently developed 4000 m-rated EyeRIS, an in situ lightfield imaging system. 2/n

Excited to share that our manuscript "In situ lightfield imaging of octopus locomotion reveals simplified control" has been published in @nature.com. www.nature.com/articles/s41... If you love 🧪🌎🦑🌊, keep reading this thread! 1/n

So grateful for this @mbarinews.bsky.social team! 🙏👏 Despite the technical difficulties, power plant fires, and my variable health, the engineering, Bioinspiration Lab, marine ops, and @montereyaq.bsky.social collections teams were able to go offshore today. I'm connecting via telepresence. 🧪🦑🌊🌎

Friendly PSA from a rando on the internet: That strange feeling you get when you are expected to accept two conflicting beliefs as truth when they’re at odds with reality? It’s called doublethink (related to doublespeak). Please PLEASE re-read Orwell’s 1984. 🙏🏽 This tactic is being used everywhere!
