How did they suffer, enough to make the coroner wonder how they really died?

I was recently told a reader asked us why we report on the abuse of children, sexual and otherwise. Isn’t it routine, so common that it’s not news?

In the news, we deal with death a lot. It never really becomes routine, but I’ve learned how to compartmentalize. That I can deal with this grief later, later.

But this photo, coming from the scene of the suspicious death of a toddler, a baby who never reached 2 years old. This photo broke me.
