Talks about the nerd shit they like.
Overall, Super Link possesses a good deal of potential, some of which it delivers on, but between the bloated and confused story and an animation style that is less than complementary, it ultimately falls short of what it could've been.

Characters are constantly introduced, developed for a bit, and dropped as background fodder, in contrast to ML's smaller cast, the core of which receive continual development throughout the series.

Compared to ML's story that gradually and naturally developed and expanded in scope until the end, SL's feels more like it expands and contracts, going to the highest stakes possible before functionally resetting the tension back to 0. The characters suffer a similar fate.

The story itself at a certain point felt rather slapdash and confused, with the last ~10 episodes as a whole just dragging on and on.

On the one hand, while I think that the animators did try and at points succeed at leveraging the 3D models to their advantage, most of the time everything came off as clunking and unengaging in scenes (though after a certain point, the Stockholm syndrome kicked in and I stopped caring as much).

On the negative side of things, there's the animation and the story. While the 2D animation was a step up from it's predecessor and at it's best some of the best 2D animation in the franchise, it comes at the cost of the 3D models.

with Kicker in particular being one of the more interesting human characters in the franchise. With his skills and abilities, his inclusion never felt as forced as other humans in the franchise. The story arcs with Inferno and Megazarak were also highlights of the show.

In addition, some of the new characters introduced serves as rather strong additions overall. Of note would have to be Kicker and Roadbuster, whose partner/friendship was fun to see...

There are some interesting elements at play in SL that had me engaged. I liked the idea of Unicron being used as a creative force in the universe and the conflict that arose early on between Alpha Q's group and the Autobots.

Agreed, and truth be told, I think his inclusion in the film as is made it worse than it would have been otherwise (mostly by being so overpowered as to make the villains not even feel like a threat during the final battle).

While a largely ok show on its own, between the horrendous errors in the first set of episodes and the less impactful script overall, it is a show I see no reason to watch over the original and as a result can't truly recommend as an alternative.

That being said, by the time I got to episodes from the second half, these errors diminished significantly for the most part. But while the scripts got better overall, I can't say any of it hit as hard as Micron Legends.

The big thing for me however was the scripting. The first three episodes were chalk filled with so many inexplicable errors and mistakes that were distracting as hell at times and I wouldn't be surprised if such errors persisted in subsequent episodes.

I also didn't care for the filters placed over a lot of the voices, finding them more detracting than immersive.

Carlos' over the top accent would almost always distract from anything else going on in the scene. Meanwhile, Mark's Unicron didn't feel either commanding or powerful enough compared to either Orson Welles' performance from G1 or Katsumi Cho's performance in Micron Legends.

On the other end of the spectrum, Matt Hill as Carlos, Terry Klassen as High Wire, and Mark Acheson as Unicron ranged from disappointing to flat out obnoxious.

The former plays the part well, being both commanding and soft as needed. And while I'm not particularly a fan of the voice that Dobson puts on as Starscream in this show, I would be remiss to ignore the passion and emotion he puts into the character's more memorable moments.

As far as voice performances go, most of the cast did their job well enough, though not many of them stuck out much to me. The real highlight performances were Garry Chalk as Optimus and Michael Dobson as Starscream.
