screenshot from Zelda Dungeon, original article from IGN: The first thing I want to tell you about in my discussion of Zelda-esqueness is an extremely important process that is incessantly connected to Zelda development and that is something I call the "Miyamoto Test," also known as "upending the tea table". The tea table is a low dining table that you sit on the floor to eat at. But, you don't see them often now a days as most Japanese people eat at Western-styled dining tables. When I was growing up in the 1950s through the 1970s, every house had one. What it means to upend the tea table -- it actually comes from a scene in a famous Japanese manga called "Star of the Giants," in which the father seated in back there on the left hits his son in front of him so hard that the food on the table is knocked up into the air. The father being in no mood to eat what's been served, upended the table -- forcing his wife to cook a new meal. This action by the head of the household was absolute and it represents the action of an old fashioned Japanese father. Of course now a days, if someone was to do that it would actually destroy the family and the father would be arrested for child abuse. So, all that remains today is the phrase 'upending the tea table.' So, long ago there was period in Japan where they thought this was proper and acceptable. Now a days with only the phrase remaining, it is generally the lead figure who takes on the role of the strong proper father. Whenever a game nears completion with only the final polish remaining, with no fail Mr. Miyamoto upends our tea table and the direction that we all thought we were going in suddenly changes dramatically.

i've said this before but i'll never get over the irony of Miyamoto & co feeling constricted by the LoZ narrative/continuity bc there wouldn't be timeline splits if he hadn't wanted OoT Link to be playable as an adult or a child bc that's the whole reason Osawa had to write time travel into the plot

But partway through development, Miyamoto-san and others on the staff started saying they wanted to see a cute little Link. Iwata: That would change the script a lot. Osawa: Yes. We thought about how we could have both the child and adult forms appear in the same game and came up with the device of going seven years into the future by drawing the Master Sword and then returning back to his child form when he returns it to the pedestal. Iwata: He travels back and forth in an instant. Osawa: Yes. That was a scenario we added later. Iwata: It's amazing that such a big change didn't cause the whole project to collapse. Everyone: (laughs) Iwata: Huh? You're all laughing. Does that mean it did sort of collapse? (laughs) Aonuma: It didn't exactly collapse, but we did have some heated exchanges!

'zelda games were never about the narrative' is. in a way true. but the titles with compelling & coherent storylines generally are that way in spite of nintendo's dominant design philosophy. koizumi didn't create the core mythology of LoZ just for players to assume it never had any meaning at all

Also, in a broader sense, Nintendo's games don't usually pursue big, dramatic stories. How would you compare that to the way other cinematic video games are done? What style is better for getting the story across? YK: You're right, EAD doesn't tend to focus on the big story in most of their games. But I was the one coming up with scenarios, just on my own, ever since the time of Link's Awakening. But even at that time, I felt like I came up with this entire scenario and a backstory for Link, but nobody really seemed to care. They were always saying, let's not try to push the story forward too much. So l would sort of try to find sneaky ways to get it in without them noticing too much. For example, I always liked the idea of you coming upon another character and hearing little bits of conversation that slowly begin to reveal different parts of the story. And that was the way that I tried to work on Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. A lot of the EAD games that do seem to have a lot of story, a lot of that came from my influence. But those are aspects of the games that Miyamoto wasn't nearly as fond of and occasionally didn't like.

i think one of the best ways to sum up gaster's view of the player & the program as a whole is his alternate end dialogue on the PS4/5 version, if you somehow finish with zero trophies, or 'fail to achieve any marks.' he's not disappointed at all, he's just like. fascinated by how you even did that

i know the overworld sprites arent necessarily sized w total accuracy to the characters' heights but. next to the other two WDG just looks so fucking huge its so funny

i love this exchange bc like. ralsei is the prince of a fantasy kingdom who has knowledge beyond even most lightners' comprehension. he knows he isn't real and that he's only sentient due to extraordinary circumstances. and he seems to cope by. not getting too attached to the idea of being a person
