If you gathered data from students, ask yourself why.

As I worked on my assessment practices, this process helped me make my approach to assessment much more meaningful.

Asking why ensures you have a reason to gather it and a method to use it, whether that's students using it or you using it.

A3 This is something I need to get better at, especially as the chair of our math dept. I feel like I have a good handle on my own thoughts and goals, but struggle explaining it to others. Part of it is I don't think the others in my dept are as open to the idea as I am. #UngradingChat

A3. To help others understand and connect with my assessment practice, I keep my door open and welcome people to come and see it in action. I encourage them to question, even disagree. This fosters an open and professional dialogue that facilitates growth and change, not judgment. #UngradingChat

A2. Started with SBG years ago, gamification, then skills-based grading. Finally read @susandblum.bsky.social’s Ungrading and @mssackstein.bsky.social’s Hacking Assessment and dived in! Huge support from @achiaravalli.bsky.social’s @growbeyondgrades.org community made it a success! #UngradingChat

A2. My entry point into shifting my assessment practice was Ken O’Connor’s book “15 Fixes”. That book challenged me to question my existing practice and offered practical solutions.

Around the same time I read an article on Medium by @achiaravalli.bsky.social that sealed the deal. #UngradingChat

No phones.

No homework.

A compromise in the phone ban discussion.

What we really want is for kids to be “present” at school.

So let’s not interfere with their being “present” at home.

Let’s have the presence of mind for the Present (times we live).

Hosted an open house event in place of formal parent-teacher conferences.

A casual opportunity for parents to see a small sample of the over 300 projects kids have been working on since September.

This is an example of the current iteration of my favorite way to design assessments.
- Aligned to a learning progression
- Early questions designed to build self-efficacy
- Clarity in what correct/incorrect answers mean for learning
