What has life taught you about…

patience?

Hi, all. Starting a daily question to inspire reflection and connection.

We all learn from experience.

We all are human.

What might we all learn from our experiential existence?

What has life taught you?

When the kid who mean mugged you for 3 years in the hallway because you addressed his hallway behavior as a freshman is finally in your class as a senior and gives you a heartfelt, “have a great Thanksgiving, Sy” as he leaves.

In connections, I believe.

Deeply.

Some (rare) days,

“You can’t pay me enough.”

Most other days,

“And, I’m getting paid?”

Teaching’s a trip.

My problem is my need for authenticity.

My bigger problem is education’s lack of authenticity.

My biggest problem is thinking I am going to fix my bigger problem.

Some days,

“Damn I’m good.”

Other days,

“WTF am I even doing?”

Teaching’s a trip.

If only kids understood the joy they bring to our hearts, even when they’re a pain in the ass.

Indeed, we teach the whole child. 🙂

It’s not alone the book.

It’s not alone the reader.

It is where the two meet.

That’s where meaning is made.

That’s what I profess to my kids.

And this is how we put it into practice.

Nothing fancy, just a good old-fashioned dialectical journal.

Book.

Reader.

Meaning.

“I can help you learn.”

“I can make you learn.”

One of these is teaching.

Trying to ‘help’ my kids discover the difference.

Had gone to audio books for a number of years.

Because kids don’t/won’t read.

Thought, at least, all would experience the book.

But, ugh, what a long suffer of passive “engagement.”

This year, back to book.

Kids will really read or they really won’t.

It’s just a book.

“Sorry for the hard day, Sy.”

Student whose behavior was not ideal yesterday.

“Eh, it’s all part of the deal. Tomorrow’s a new day.”

When real is the deal in the classroom, we find our way, one day at a time.

Teaching and learning is an equation with infinite variables.

Never to be solved.

Always to be worked on.

That’s our work.

Our worthy work to bring teaching and learning closer together.

The sum we ceaselessly seek.

That’s teaching.

When I quit thinking I HAD to be right, I quit thinking others HAD to be wrong.

I changed my thinking.

I changed myself.

I changed my life.

Now, I simply am.

And others simply are.

Data Reveal!

I have kids at, below, and above standard.

30 years.

Same old story.

Maybe year 31 will be the year.
