The two ASVs were also keystone species that co-excluded in a network analysis, surrounded by ASVs from similar genera so each seemed to form a metabolic cluster.

Our data showed two ASVs (Gran-5a37 and Gran-7770) could explain PC2 in our PCoA projection of unweighted UniFrac distance after Granulacella was removed.

When is the last time you could explain any axis of a PCoA with 2 ASVs or OTUs? And yes, I'll wait.

I wonder partially because while the bioinformatician in me doesn't mind MAGs, the biochemist isn't sure how you operationalize those into physiological experiments. To be a "real Species", it has to be cultured in isolation and those MAGs could be real or a Magdeburg Unicorn
