Being a southern progressive is getting attacked by your electeds on the right only to turn around and get slapped from the left. Fucking stop.

Newsflash: NYC isn’t everyone’s dream. I would never want to live there. That doesn’t mean it’s trash. It means it’s not for me. You don’t have to come live where I do, but you don’t have to shit on it either. And maybe have some empathy for folks who are fighting every day for a better South.

I love my city. It’s home. My family and friends are here and I care about it enough to fight to make it better. There are so many more just like me. And we’re fucking tired of being told we live in a god forsaken hellhole that no one in their right mind would want to live in.

Liberals and leftists in the South exist and have always existed. We don’t need non-Southern “saviors” (the “liberal California songwriters” in the one comment) to come in and save us from our own stupidity or whatever it is you all think justifies ignoring us, counting us out, and shitting on us.

You know how you feel in your blue state being governed by a fascist federal govt you didn’t vote for? That’s what living in a city in the South has felt like FOREVER. Our local govts pass progressive policies only to have them undone by state legislators.

Not only have they driven up housing prices enough to price out natives/locals, but they bring with them more cash to prop up the fascist right wing state govts here, making conditions for blue cities even worse.

Setting aside the problematic nature of calling the region of the country with the largest black population “uncivilized”—those living in large cities in the South have been dealing with a flood of right wing blue state refugees for years…

Yes, threats of leaving NYC are probably largely empty, but the phenomenon of wealthy right wingers moving to cities in the South is very real and shrugging it off as “like they would want to live in such a shit hole” is uncalled for and unhelpful.
