Siis hetkinen. Kyllähän Valitut Palat -lehteä edelleen julkaistaan, jopa suomeksi. KMT 2023:n mukaan keskimääräisellä numerolla oli 134 200 lukijaa, eli suunnilleen saman verran kuin Talouselämällä. Vuoden 2025 tutkimuksessa VP ei enää ollut mukana, varmaan tilaajamäärä laskenut aika paljon.

HSL uusii ratikkakarttansa. Uusi kartta on tehty in-house, mutta minulla oli ilo ja kunnia olla mukana sparraamassa suunnittelua. Omasta mielestäni lopputulos on tosi hyvä!

Kiinnostavaa: Yle käyttää uutisessaan toimituksessa tehtyä tekoälykuvaa. Sinänsä perusteltua: suunnitteilla oleva tornihotelli, josta ei ole vielä havainnekuvia. Ylen AI-linjaus ei ole yhtä tiukka kuin esim. HS:llä, joten tällainenkaan käyttö ei ole kiellettyä, mutta kuvanlaatu on kyllä aika surkea.

Obvs the grid cartogram on the right works better – I have used this exact example in my (and @jhilden.bsky.social’s) book and in many lectures – but it is exceptionally good, and it also gives a reasonably good amount of geographic context. The type of thing I believe readers hate is more like this

I tend to agree, but would argue that the optimal shape may depend on the geographic pattern. Circles are an all-around safe bet, but patterns where the observations concentrate on a narrow strips, such as along rivers, roads, tectonic plate boundaries, etc. can work better with bars/triangles.

Take this map from Imhof’s “Atlas der Schweiz,” showing power plants by type and yearly production. Here areas work perfectly well: We see that nuclear plants are huge in terms of output, oil-fired plants and hydropower vary more. We see many of the largest plants cluster near northern border. Etc.

For anyone interested, here is another way of doing the calculation, using both the square root method and the Flannery method. (The only thing that changes between them is the exponent.)

📊 #Dataviz PSA: When using areas to depict numbers, make sure you are indeed scaling the *area*, and not the width/length/diameter of the circles (or other shapes). Because software such as Illustrator don’t let you specify the area directly, you need do a small calculation to get it right. 1/2

Beautiful. I wonder if anyone has tried recreating the Turgot map of Paris with satellite photos! (Obvs post-Haussmann Paris looks very different than 1750s Paris, but that only makes for a more interesting comparison.)

Mukavaa on se, kun: muutto alkaa olla siinä pisteessä, että pienestä keskeneräisyydestä huolimatta asunto alkaa jo kovasti muistuttaa kotia. Pitkästä aikaa kotona on myös kunnon musa-corner, jossa voi helposti kuunnella vinyylejä ja CD:itä.

Well, that was a nice trip! Still, it’s nice to be home, especially after dragging all this across half of Europe… 😅
I’ll write a separate thread later about the practical stuff I learned, but at this point let me just say that 1st class train is the best way to travel ❤️

That said, 282 injuries in 4M rides (71 per million rides), would be terrible, worse than motorcycle.
