The Farmhouse Audrey met Chris, while bartending and after a bad breakup. Things moved fast. A whirlwind romance by all accounts. After an intimate wedding and short honeymoon, Audrey moved into Chris’s old farmhouse just outside of town. It was beautiful, but almost lonely — white with black shutters, wrap around porch, creaking hardwood floors, and acres of quiet fields. You could hear the humming of the wind as it blew. A fresh start. For Audrey, it was a dream come true. After everything she’d survived — her ex’s abuse, his drug addiction, the trauma, slowly rebuilding herself — this house felt just like peace she needed. And Chris, was everything her ex wasn’t. He was charming, confident, and steady. He listened, made her laugh, made her feel safe. Within weeks of moving in, odd little things started happening. The faint scent of a perfume she didn’t wear drifting through the hall at night. Then a lipstick on the bathroom counter she didn’t own. A sweater that wasn’t hers. Empty wine bottles, she hadn’t drank. Her ex had cheated countless times, she knew the signs. “Whose lipstick is this?” she asked, trying to sound calm. But it came out as an accusation rather than a simple question. Chris didn’t even glance at it. “ I don’t know. Isn’t it yours?” “I don’t wear lipstick.” Audrey said flatly. With a sly smile, he pulled her into his arms. “You used to. What about that red shade you wore when we first started dating?” She turned the lipstick tube over in her hand, reading the label, “No, Chris, I’ve never worn red lipstick.” “Okay. Okay.” He chuckled, throwing his hands in the air. “Look Audrey, you’re probably tired. You’ve been unpacking for days, barely sleeping. Maybe you just forgot. Getting married, the honeymoon, this new house, it’s a lot.” She was skeptical. But maybe he was right. She was exhausted. Then came the footsteps at night — footsteps on the stairs, the faint sound of a door opening somewhere below. Once, she swore she heard a woman’s … Whenever she told Chris, he’d smile and brush it off. “This house is old. It creaks. The vents whistle when the wind blows. I think your imagination is getting the best of you.” “I heard someone, Chris. I’m sure of it.” He looked concerned. “You’ve been hearing things since the move. Smelling things, seeing things. You don’t think maybe you’re… under too much stress? Maybe you’re slipping back into before?” “Before? What? What are you talking about? I’m not crazy,” she’d snap. “I never said you were.”, Chris quietly responded, “But I think you should talk to someone again. Just in case.” The next week, the doctor said it could be anxiety or stress. Lack of sleep could make a person see or hear things. He prescribed something stronger to help her sleep and something new for the anxiety. Rather than wait for the pharmacy to fill both prescriptions, she asked Chris to pick it up for her on his way home. Within days, things started to spiral. Sometimes Audrey would wake up freezing in the dark, to find their bedroom windows wide open. Curtains swaying. Or music coming from downstairs. Lipstick on the bathroom towels. Once, she found muddy footprints in the kitchen leading out the back door. Only they weren’t hers or Chris’s. When she told Chris, he gave her that same patient look he always did. “Maybe you did it,” he said gently. “Maybe you got up in the night and forgot.” “I didn’t,” she whispered. Sighing, he grabbed her shoulders firmly. “I know it’s hard to trust yourself right now. But I’m here. I’ll keep you safe. You just need rest.” He guided her back into bed, kissed her forehead. “You’re not well, Audrey. But it’s okay. We’ll get through this together.” She wanted to believe him. That it was okay. That they’d get through it together. But the next night, she woke again — this time to voices. Chris’s voice — and a woman’s. Quietly laughing. Her heart racing, Audrey forced herself out of bed. The medication made her body feel heavy. It took everything just to… They both looked up, startled. Suddenly the woman was gone, as if she’d never been there at all. Audrey made her way down the stairs, Chris blankly staring at her. He didn’t look quite like himself. Confused, she began to wonder if it was Chris at all. Then her vision blurred — and everything went black. When she woke, she found herself in the hospital. Chris sat beside her bed. His face was full of worry. “The doctors are, well, they’re concerned,” he said softly. “They want to keep you for seventy-two hours, a psych hold, just to make sure you’re okay. After what happened…” “What, what happened?” her voice raspy and weak. “You don’t remember? You fell,” he said. “You’ve been having these… I don’t know, episodes? Sleepwalking. You’ve been seeing things. You really scared me, Audrey. I love you, but you need help.” He reached out, gently caressing her hand. “You’re not well.” And she believed him. So she stayed. But later that night, fragments of memories returned. The woman’s face. The laughter. Chris, not reaching to save her, but pushing. Had he hurt her? Was she imagining it? When they released her, Chris came to pick her up. While he collected the discharge paperwork, Audrey pretended to use the bathroom and slipped out the side door. She had to know the truth. Chris had once told her about his ex-wife, Laura. She was crazy — a liar, a thief, a drug addict, bi-polar, suicidal, and everything in between. “She tried to ruin my life”, he’d said. Intuition, or maybe desperation, led Audrey to look her up. She found almost nothing. No social media, no public records. It was like she never even existed. Was she even real? By now, Chris was calling non-stop. Texts were flooding in: Where are you? You need help. You’re not okay. Audrey ignored them. Finally, she found an address a few towns over. She called a friend, someone she’d barely spoken to since marrying Chris, and asked if she’d drive her there. The drive was quiet. Audrey didn’t know what to say. She… The neighborhood was nice — maybe too nice for someone who was a “mess” as Chris had claimed. The house was stunning. Nothing like the old farmhouse. A woman answered the door — well-dressed and pretty. “Hi…uh, I’m looking for Laura?” Audrey asked, voice trembling. “I’m Laura,” the woman said warily. “You don’t know me, and I really don’t know you, but I’m Chris’s wife, Audrey. I think… I think something’s wrong. And thought you might have answers for me?” Laura stared at Audrey for a moment. Her expression softened. Then she let out a long tired sigh. Like she’d been expecting this day to come. “Chris’s doing it again, isn’t he?” Audrey’s throat tightened. “He’s doing it again? Doing what exactly?” “Making you doubt yourself. Making you think you’re losing your mind.” Audrey blinked. “How, how did you—” “Because I was you,” Laura said. “The lipstick. The perfume. The noises at night. He used to move things around, leave things where I’d find them. He was drugging me. I thought the house was haunted.” Audrey’s stomach turned to ice. “It’s not haunted, I’m not losing—” “No,” Laura said. “It’s Chris. He likes to control you. He wants you to be confused. He likes when you cry and apologize for things you didn’t do. It’s more than just cheating — more than all the affairs. He gets off on making you think you’re crazy. That’s what he loves.” She met Audrey’s eyes. “Listen Audrey, he’s not a good person. He is not a good husband. He’s gaslighting you. He’s a narcissist. A psychopath. And he’ll never stop until you stop believing him.” Outside, the wind picked up — howling like a voice. For the first time, Audrey realized — the haunting had never been the house. It had been Chris all along.

Ghosts. They’d been keeping Leah up for nights on end. Pleading. Begging. But there was no one there. It was just Leah. She had always lived alone. All the other nights, she’d simply curl up in her bed and pull the blankets tightly over her ears to muffle the noise. “Stop it. You’re not real.” She’d say over and over, until she finally drifted off to sleep. But tonight, the whispers only grew louder. More urgent. Lately, she felt as if her mind were slipping. She’d begun to question her reality. Music playing that she didn’t remember turning on. Items suddenly moved from one place to another. Missing time. At her last appointment, Leah had asked her therapist about it. He’d said, “The mind will sometimes create layers, walls to protect us from what we cannot face”. Her hand trembled as she unlocked the door with a key she didn’t recognize. Where had it come from? As she descended the stairs, the air grew colder. She felt as if she were being watched. Everything was quiet now, but something didn’t seem right. There was an old brick wall she didn’t quite remember being there before. But it’d been so long since she had last been down there, she wasn’t entirely sure. Had she simply forgotten? Leah stepped closer. She saw a tiny gap in the wall and without even thinking, began tearing at the bricks until her fingers were bleeding. She couldn’t stop. Finally, she could see into the room. Huddled in the dark, was a woman. Hair matted, clothes torn and dirty. Frozen in terror, Leah sat there as the woman met her gaze. “Who…Who did this to you?”, she whispered. “You did”, said the woman. A graphic of a red and black brick wall with wood flooring. She had carefully bricked off this corner of the basement as a familiar voice whispered, “Hide her. Hide them”. While others screamed, “No, please don’t!”. It was at that moment, she realized, she hadn’t locked anyone in. As she opened her eyes, she saw there was no other woman. Only a mirror. A mirror she had hidden away to lock herself out. To silence the others. To forget. Her reflection flickered. Dozens of Leah’s staring back. Showing the other versions of herself. Fractured. Broken. Her face, twisting and changing. Angry. Smiling. Afraid. Filled with rage. Laughter. And relief. There were no ghosts, no haunting. It was only ever her. And them. And now that the wall was broken…now that she could see. They were all awake.
