i have about two million followers across three platforms. statistically, about 20,000 of you are in the top 1% in terms of wealth. if any of you feel like leaving me your home in a walkable neighborhood when you die, that would make for a very heartwarming social media story.

Just bringing this thread back for reasons.

An untenured woman assistant professor burned a flag in her class for pedagogy in 1989 and it remains the most badass thing any colleague I’ve had has ever done and I’ve had some pretty badass colleagues
I have a emeritus colleague who burned a flag *in her classroom* the same year as the decision to illustrate the strength of personal objections that would arise and the meaning of “symbolic speech.” Every time I see her I’m just like, wow, badass.

The young people who would have been most likely to lead the domestic anti-fascist fight in 2025 were repeatedly arrested, beat, jailed, mocked by elites and non-elites over the past 5 years. This was bipartisan. I find it interesting whenever some people ask 'where the young people are' now.

So I vaguely recalled in the wake of Sweeney jeans ad discourse (which I was genuinely trying to avoid) that at some point I thought I learned that Black people gave us jeans — I just couldn’t recall the source until today. There is a doc which this article summarizes, with sources cited. Cheers.

Today is Juneteenth, did you know there’s a specific flag to honor the holiday? In fact, it has a backstory that goes back to the late 1990s. Capital B spoke with Ben Haith, the flag’s creator, and others to learn more about its history and impact. capitalbnews.org/juneteenth-f...

And I resent the way companies are trying to force it. The other day Slack emailed saying they were adding AI to their product that already functions fine. I immediately cancelled that account. I don’t want it. It is not a benefit or feature. It is a yoke. I am happy on this hill even if I am alone

When are the people who said nothing while student protestors were attacked for their free speech last year going to admit they made a catastrophic mistake? That would actually be useful. Weaken their rhetorical tools.

Admit you made a huge fucking mistake

Was putting up a Ramadan display at my library and realized we don't have any YA fiction by and about Black American Muslims. A quickie google search didn't turn anything up either. Given that Black Americans make up nearly 20% of the US Muslim population, this seems like a big gap. Any recs?

Yeah, we loved Windsor's Chinatown... we don't have one here because of racist federal highway policies deliberately destroying ours.

Once I came back with an out of town friend. We'd crossed the border to have dinner. US Customs hassled us with "aren't there good restaurants in the United States?"
My family used to cross the border to have Sunday dinner at this buffet place. As I grew up I started noticing changes at the border. The agents & people in general stopped being friendly. It became a burden to cross. I don't know if I'll ever return. I miss visiting but it's not worth the hassle.
