Is it controversial to say…picture the Venn diagram of people who misunderstand p-values and people who don’t understand Bayesian statistics? 👀

I think they are likely to still prioritise translational/implementation research as a whole, but the NIHR has a “Better Methods Better Research” programme (in partnership with MRC) so they are interested in the work of methodologists too! www.nihr.ac.uk/research-fun...

They say this: “Who can use this service? Researchers applying to national, open and peer-reviewed research programmes, including all domestic NIHR funding programmes, UK Research Councils and national health and care charities.” (Link: www.nihr.ac.uk/support-and-...)

My pleasure! I’ve had good experiences with the NIHR RSS who can often help suggest appropriate pre-application PPIE/PPIE strategies, even for methodologically-focused research. They also often have small pots of funding available to support early PPIE. :)

If it helps at all, I have found funders to be very amenable to a flexible definition of PPIE. This needn’t only be patients/carers. It might include practitioners using a method, people who input data, or a community of practice who might rely on a method. NIHR uses this expansive definition, e.g.

In order to protect my own limited energy in a day, I need to start restricting the depth to which I am willing engage with interlocutors who are using generative AI to communicate with me. I simply can’t keep up.

You would expect someone to review your application for more than the 30 seconds it takes to copy and paste a JD into ChatGPT and ask it to produce an email to send, so don’t do this. It is usually plainly obvious and (some might say) frankly, a little insulting. We see it enough from our students.

You will save yourself a lot of effort and you will start the conversation off on the right foot with potential employers/colleagues. We want to show respect for one another, so demonstrate that from the first interaction, even in an informal enquiry.

I won't go so far as to advocate that everyone needs the same breadth of training as me (perhaps it's even not advisable...), but I like to think that it has really provided me with a very expansive toolkit for tackling problems I come across in work. How glad I am to be professionally curious.

understanding the basics of genre theory (thanks @katjathieme.bsky.social for ENGL 112!). There's a risk of seeing a throughline where there isn't one -- a lot of choices weren't part of some grand plan -- but I have been very lucky that things I studied seem to be helpful in serendipitous ways. :)
