I am not at all a costume person, but this Halloween, I keep catching sight of myself in mirrors and wondering when I started dressing up as my father every day.

Funnily enough, Mitchell and Webb (of "Are we the baddies?" fame) had a radio sketch about exactly this.

86 47. Because "The Constitution prohibits the acting president from holding any office of trust, and the fact that his handpicked lackeys on the USSC set up absurd roadblocks against enforcing the law makes them criminal co-conspirators who are likewise barred from office" is too hard to chant.

Chronomancy indeed.

Very weird tech support issue at work. I eventually managed to get the rep to admit that the troubleshooting step they were asking me to perform before honoring the warranty was a Kafkaesque request akin to a coroner asking me to give a headless corpse a sandwich. It's the little things.

Twelve score and nine years ago, a violent mob brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in navel-gazing and dedicated to the proposition that they shouldn't be hanged for treason.

When it was finally stress-tested, it held up about as well as that sounds like it would.

I am the very model of a modern chipmunk animal.
I exercise my voice and keep my diction understandable.
I dress in tweeds and ride velocipedes about the quadrangle,
And check the time when I've a mind on timepieces adorable;

Lovely piece. Reminiscent of the closing scenes of The Ruling Class (1972).

Nailed it. Poverty isn't a plot device.
Poor character written by an author who has experienced poverty: My problem is that I'm $300 short on the rent and now my car is making a noise

Poor character written by a rich author: My problem is that I feel so inferior beside these beautiful, sophisticated rich people

O nightmare town of R'lyeh,
Expectantly we wait!
Beneath thy deeps, dead dreamers sleep
And hostile stars aggrate.
Here through thy dark streets creepeth
An all-consuming blight;
The madd'ning fears of all the years
Shall spread from thee tonight.

Experimenting with format. Tried writing a story that can be sensibly read a few sentences at a time in the form of skeets. Not sure how well it works.

Keeping It

It's January 7th. I've been expecting for 6 months now. I haven't been keeping a diary, but I think maybe I should. Today at least was memorable, and I don't want to forget it. Will I give this diary to you, one day? Will I want to keep it?

Fresh-grown and teeming with threats,
And we went in unsupervised

I always feel that unjust actions should be equivalently redressed; on this principle, I oppose the death penalty for all crimes except treason and support it for treason. Intolerable social ills that fall short of treason should be cured either by other official penalties or by unofficial actors.

I like but don't love musicals, with one exception: A Clockwork Orange. Better than either version of the book, worlds better than the movie by that Kubrick creep. Burgess's real message shines through: people can grow up, but nation-states are doomed to perpetual destructive adolescence.

Obligatory people and creations I adore thread:
Terry Pratchett. The Discworld is a wonderful gift. Fiercely humanistic, bitingly satirical, hilarious and deeply moving, it is everything great fiction should be. GNU STP.

Just hold on tight; when the time is right,
They'll watch us move the planet.
