Here is the Tahrir Institute team at Bread&Net in Beirut last week. I was part of a panel on narratives during wartime.

The highlight, however, was how stylish I looked in all the photos.

Latest read.

Mishra’s original piece on the politicization of the Shoah in LRB was brilliant. The book picks up where that article left off.

A masterpiece by the late Elias Khoury, who we lost almost a year ago now.

5 journalists are dead and the NYT decides to write a smear piece depicting Al Jazeera as a Hamas mouthpiece.

AJ is far from perfect & deserves as much scrutiny & criticism as many others. But the timing & one-sidedness of the article is an effort to legitimise the killing of AJ’s staff.

I just finished Mazen Kerbaj’s collection of editorial cartoons documenting the daily horror’s of Gaza from 17 Oct 2023 until Jan 2024.

It reminds that Israel’s genocidal intent & the wanton, indiscriminate killing of Palestinians was clear from the start

“‘Thirty-five children were killed.’ Well, it wasn’t 35 children. It was many fewer.”

“The children who were killed,” (Jack Lew, US ambassador to Israel) added, “turned out to have been the children of Hamas fighters.”

A fighter from Zabadani with Hayat Tahrir ash Sham poses outside Sednaya prison. He said he helped liberate it. They found a thousand people, but not his own relatives who had been disappeared years ago.

In Ummayad Place, fighters were firing celebratory gunfire into the air. Locals from around country gathered to celebrate & take photos with fighters.

Most were Syrian but we also saw a few foreign fighters. One was from Tatarstan in Russia but said he’d spent 8 years in Syria & planned to stay.

The Syrian border was unmanned this morning. By the time we crossed back to Lebanon, armed men, who said they were from Hayat Tahrir as Sham, had set up in the vicinity & loosely waved through cars

Reports are mounting that a ceasefire could be declared today. Meanwhile, Israel is still heavily bombing Dahiyeh.

Escalations often occur before the end and we hope the end is in sight.

Israeli attack on Beirut’s Basta Fawqa neighborhood that killed 29 on Saturday.

It was the deadliest attack on Beirut proper since the war started & came without warning.

Palestinian flags are often hung near wreckage after attacks.

Due to the war, my partner is staying in Paris and I’ve been bouncing around apartments in Beirut for the last year.

Moved into a new place two days ago and decided to start building my personal library to give myself a feeling of rootedness.

One of the most dystopian things about this war is the various ways people have profited off of it. Here’s an IG ad that popped up on my feed.
