Big ups to Wisconsin bsky.app/profile/gove...
Last night, the Trump Administration sent a letter suggesting Wisconsin should return our FoodShare payments.

100%. One of my most common bits of advice to engineers is to remember that people will read your code 50x more than you’ll write it. Optimizing for reducing keystrokes or feeling cool at the cost of future readability is a huge trap.

More recently: the Metaverse. The tech is real, there are real use cases that generate revenue, but a few tech execs convinced themselves it was 100x more than it was. Billions lit on fire, FB is now Meta, and there was never a “pop”… just slow acceptance that its normal tech, not a new era.

I believe in my soul that this but unironically is why a lot of executives push for RTO.

OpenAI isn’t really in the ChatGPT business, that’s the fundamental disconnect. They’re in the Magical Robot Slave That Can Replace Annoying Human Workers business. The former is almost entirely sold as a promise for the latter, and if they are stuck at ChatGPT-but-faster-and-cheaper they lose.

In the most literal sense yes Altman has the choice every day to close up shop and retire to the Bahamas too. But when 95% of your valuation is based on the notion that if you light enough money on fire you get AGI and take over the world its not a viable business decision to stop incinerating cash.

Imagine the industry-wide psychic pain we’ll be constantly experiencing in 10 years when these are the “legacy codebases” we’re trying to maintain.

Casually having an SNES controller hanging around is a flex though

Palantir’s entire schtick is to vice-signal as much as possible, at this point they are more directly in the evil business than data analytics.

Any time a managerial type talks about code in terms of lines / total code volume it’s time to get Suspicious.

The trick to those claims is that a lot of code was already machine generated. Make a new Java class with five fields its 6 human lines, 80 lines of boilerplate generated by the IDE. Prompt Copilot to do it and they give all 86 lines to the LLM as if a human would have typed them all otherwise.
