Closed out our church's 15-month journey through Acts. This was one of my main takeaways:
The Spirit is never hindered by our wounds or our waiting or our anxieties or our uncertainties. If anything, the Spirit does some of the most astonishing work in places we think are the most constrained.

It’s been quite a year. Grieving so much and also grateful for so much—and so many of you. And I’m still here, still going, and still committed to working for a world where all can flourish, by the grace of God.

So, in the words of civil rights organizer Bob Moses: “Don’t think necessarily of starting a movement. Do what you think needs to be done, set an example, and hope your actions will click with someone else.”

As we stood in the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, a monument to thousands of lynching victims.

As we learned from people still fighting for dignity: BMike and Studio Be answering brutality with beauty; Michelle Browder and the Mothers of Gynecology reclaiming the very site where enslaved Black women were abused in the name of “medicine.”

As we met Tish Taylor fighting for her community in “Cancer Alley,” where mostly Black residents face cancer rates nearly double the national average due to petrochemical plants on former plantation lands.

We set out to encounter a more honest story of this country, and I returned feeling both heartbroken and hopeful.

Empires can raid our communities, but they cannot take our compassion, our convictions, or our courage. They can build monuments to greed and grift, but they cannot take our generosity. They can pollute the air, but they cannot choke out our hope. Because we belong to a different kingdom.

We showed up outside the Capitol to pray, sing, and read Scripture as the Senate prepares to debate a bill that slashes food aid and health care for the most vulnerable—while giving $1 trillion in tax breaks to the wealthy.

Even as I remember and pray for friends and folks in LA, I was grateful and energized to stand today with other clergy, faith leaders, and people of faith for A Pentecost Witness for a Moral Budget.
