Closed out our church's 15-month journey through Acts. This was one of my main takeaways:

The Spirit is never hindered by our wounds or our waiting or our anxieties or our uncertainties. If anything, the Spirit does some of the most astonishing work in places we think are the most constrained.

43. Taking a moment to reflect.

It’s been quite a year. Grieving so much and also grateful for so much—and so many of you. And I’m still here, still going, and still committed to working for a world where all can flourish, by the grace of God.

So, in the words of civil rights organizer Bob Moses: “Don’t think necessarily of starting a movement. Do what you think needs to be done, set an example, and hope your actions will click with someone else.”

As we stood in the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, a monument to thousands of lynching victims.

Heartbroken because the inhumanity we encountered isn’t just history—it’s now.

As we learned from people still fighting for dignity: BMike and Studio Be answering brutality with beauty; Michelle Browder and the Mothers of Gynecology reclaiming the very site where enslaved Black women were abused in the name of “medicine.”

As we met Tish Taylor fighting for her community in “Cancer Alley,” where mostly Black residents face cancer rates nearly double the national average due to petrochemical plants on former plantation lands.

We set out to encounter a more honest story of this country, and I returned feeling both heartbroken and hopeful.

Heartbroken as we were led through the Whitney Plantation by someone whose ancestor was enslaved there.

“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” — James Baldwin

Two weeks ago, I returned from ReStory US—a pilgrimage through the American South with the Telos Group and Christ City Church's Mosaic peacemaking cohort.

Empires can raid our communities, but they cannot take our compassion, our convictions, or our courage. They can build monuments to greed and grift, but they cannot take our generosity. They can pollute the air, but they cannot choke out our hope. Because we belong to a different kingdom.

From Sunday at Christ City Church:

"God’s power doesn’t always run through the hallways of power that we often think of: presidents and legislators and judges, those with wealth or weapons. More often than not, God’s power moves through the margins.

“Asian American history is American history.”

Got to meet and hear from @michaelluo.bsky.social about his book “Strangers in the Land: Exclusion, Belonging, and the Epic Story of the Chinese in America.”

Thanks to Michael Wear and the Center for Christianity & Public Life for hosting.

Gonna put #FiveMinuteFriday on the shelf for a bit.

For almost 7 months, I’ve been posting nearly every week, sharing from DC—the epicenter of so many cruel, chaotic, and incompetent decisions—and trying to process it all as a pastor, through the lens of my faith.

Too tired from the week for a #FiveMinuteFriday. So will just say: #FreeDC.

And: “Cursed is anyone who obstructs the legal rights of immigrants, orphans, or widows.” - Deuteronomy 27:19

This is the message I shared with our Christ City community this evening, in light of yesterday's news ... 🧵

“If a church does not attend to its geography, whatever is going on inside it is vapid and superficial.” - Dr. Willie James Jennings

Pray for our city.

All of this is being done (on false pretexts) simply to exert control.

Grateful for this Christ City team. Just got back from our summer retreat—an important opportunity to bond, as well as to plan, pray, and recharge together in preparation for the work of being and bringing the good news.

Reminder: find people to do good with.

Eleven.

Another year down—and what a year. Grateful to get to navigate all of the joys and sorrows of life together.

Just returned from vacation, working on Sunday's sermon, and celebrating an anniversary today, so no #FiveMinuteFriday talk this week.

Only this reminder: let's keep going, friends.

Less than 60 years ago, our marriage would’ve been illegal in many states. On this day in 1967, the Supreme Court ruled in Loving v. Virginia that bans on interracial marriage were unconstitutional.

It’s a powerful reminder: Legality ≠ morality.

Grateful to be among friends.

In the spirit of Pentecost, we lifted our voices to remind our leaders—and ourselves—of the God we serve: A God of justice and mercy. A defender of the poor and disinherited.

We showed up outside the Capitol to pray, sing, and read Scripture as the Senate prepares to debate a bill that slashes food aid and health care for the most vulnerable—while giving $1 trillion in tax breaks to the wealthy.

Even as I remember and pray for friends and folks in LA, I was grateful and energized to stand today with other clergy, faith leaders, and people of faith for A Pentecost Witness for a Moral Budget.
