This Coretta Scott King AND Newbery award winning title was inspired by formerly enslaved people escaped and built communities in the Great Dismal Swamp. It’s another part of history I knew nothing about before reading this novel. #weneeddiversebooks

This middle grade historical fiction novel in verse just won a Newbery Honor and Coretta Scott King author honor. Take a look at the Black homesteader movement through the eyes of three women in 1879. It’s a great read anytime but especially during Black History Month.
