Another look at the Tulsa Race Massacre, this time in a teen novel with a love story.

Another award/honor winning book about a piece of Black history I knew absolutely nothing about until the last few years.

There’s a possibility I do a bit too much baking since I mentally told myself it would be a good morning to “preheat” the car

Hubs gave me flowers and chocolate for Valentines Day, but what really made me tear up was the donation he gave to Planned Parenthood 😍

Today’s highlight is a notable teen book takes a look at the Rodney King verdict and the LA Riots through the eyes of a wealthy Black teen. It was a finalist for the Morris Award and a YALSA top ten Best Fiction for Young Adults pick.

This little bird has been hanging out by our front door on and off for the past day or two. Doesn’t appear hurt and it isn’t there all the time, but I think we’ve been adopted

This Coretta Scott King AND Newbery award winning title was inspired by formerly enslaved people escaped and built communities in the Great Dismal Swamp. It’s another part of history I knew nothing about before reading this novel. #weneeddiversebooks

The first day of Black History Month was also Ice Cream for Breakfast Day. This is a great book to learn more about a pioneer behind the sweet treat as we know it today.

A swoony teen romance about a wealthy Black family in the 1910s. This fun YA read is inspired by the real-life story of C.R. Patterson and his family.

This middle grade historical fiction novel in verse just won a Newbery Honor and Coretta Scott King author honor. Take a look at the Black homesteader movement through the eyes of three women in 1879. It’s a great read anytime but especially during Black History Month.
