It really bothers me as a black woman to see so many people bashing the accomplishments of one skater to bolster another. Ilia's backflip is cool. Surya's backflip is cool. This isn't a race issue. The ISU has bigger problems. #figureskating

There are plenty of groundbreaking skaters who were stifled by the rules at the time. Midori Ito was the first woman to land a triple axle in competition, but she never won the gold because of the technical requirements of her time. She's still an Olympic silver medalist and an icon.

Every Olympics we get a bunch of people claiming Surya couldn't do a backflip because of racism. This is untrue. Surya was a very accomplished skater with several world medals. The backflip is not her only accomplishment.
