It is a school day and the mall is emptied of its usual teenage patronage. Now is the time for another species unique to the mall habitat; the dreaded mall walkers. They are a pack animal resplendent in their neon track pants. They cruise the climate controlled halls. These third space parasites buy nothing even though they have the financial weight of my entire senior class combined. If youth is wasted on the young then money is wasted on the old.

I realize I am now a threat to her reputation. If these other girls see Mel hanging out in the dark, alone with me, the social ramifications could be dire. I can’t do that to her. I flick away the end of blunt so the other girls cannot have it. Then I slowly melt backwards into the darkness. It only takes a few steps before I am indiscernible from any other teenage boy.

I spend my morning instead applying a thick layer of black nail polish to my fingers. I do not care about actual style, but like bright colors in nature, the paint acts like a natural warning sign to my peers to keep away. That I can be dangerous. My black metal tee shirt and ball chain necklace creates a similar effect. My clothes are my armour. I finish by applying small amounts of gel to my hair, creating small spikes, completing the illusion of a fierce creature.

Made of two poisons ionically bonded together, salt has also been praised for its purifying effects. Used to preserve food from spoilage, salt has earned its reputation through its actions, not just symbology. The British even tried to block off the salt supply to treasonous Boston during the early days of the American Revolution. They did not count on the savvy and practical Cape Codders to start their own domestic salt production distilled from the sea itself, an industry that lasted decades after the blockade was lifted. America is built on salt. It runs in my New England veins.

I grab a change of clothes off my floor. It is Tuesday, which means I also have to grab my work shirt. Stupid Tuesday. Tuesday should not exist. There was no such thing as Tuesday before we decided it should exist. We wished it into existence. Tuesday is nothing more than a tulpa we created so we can enforce order over time itself. All so I can make it to work on time and make sure some soccer mom gets her turkey and mayo club at exactly 4:45. Fuck, I hate work.

“Ignore him he is hungover” Shasha said peeking in from the kitchenette “You hungover? I’ve never seen you hungover in my life. What did you get up to?” “Don’t ask me. I didn't even know he was going out. He did this on his own” Shasha said with slightly more anger than she meant to express. “Touchy subject” Zee said and took a seat next to Maraha on the couch. “What did you bring?” asked Maraha “Chips, popcorn, some wine and a silly romantic comedy. You know, typical girls' night. I guess you can join” “I feel so honored” “I got the real stuff” Shasha said, coming in with hamburgers and a large plate of fries. Almost as soon as she set them down Maraha grabbed for one and ate hardly. “Geeze, I guess someone needs some grease,” Zee said. She watched him eat, she noticed his hands. His knuckles were scraped, under his nails was dark. She looked him over again, he did not look hungover, he looked like he had been in a fight.

He looked dirty, bruised and covered in small burn marks. Tilya had been working on him for a while. It obviously was not working and that is why I was called. Get over here Vayen, Tilya commanded. I can’t, he will see my face. I very much doubt that will matter, she said coyly.

I hear a little door opening noise. Not a real door, it is worse. It comes from my Instant Messenger. I don’t know why I keep this open. No one ever talks to me. I get back home as the golden hour hits. Its soft light holds no solace for me. I know every rotation the tilt of the Earth will bring it earlier and earlier. I cannot change the movement of the planet any more than I can change my own nature. A great change is almost upon us. Darkness is consuming the world and eventually darkness will consume me too. All will be shadows in the end.

For now all the attention is funneled into the ritual of getting as faded as quickly as our collective metabolisms will allow. It is a rite of passage that I actually approve of. The temptation to start on my own journey into that beautiful state of mental anesthetization is strong, but I refuse to start without Mel. I do not see her. I have no idea what to do with myself. I hang towards the back and simply observe. Watching the slow death of final photons of light cast from the retreating sun calms my nerves slightly. It is a familiar sight in this alien environment.

I follow the trail but I don’t need to, I know the woods by heart. It is a short walk. A fifteen-minute adventure if I move quickly. I never move quickly if I don’t have to. I take my time to enjoy the passage of the familiar foliage that I have watched slowly grow all summer. Soon, my foliage friends will die, but not before a blaze of glory of yellows and reds as their cellular structures break down. If only I knew my death would bring about something with even a fraction of the beauty of a single maple leaf.

Everything was worth the cost. He would always credit his wins to his superior equipment and not his innate talents. “Vincient, nice shorts. Are you trying to show off your muscular physique?” “Harvey, always a pleasure. I assure you I have never gotten any complaints about my… physique, ” Vincient said, giving a wry smile to Dr. Harvey Cumulus as he waited for him to get into position on the court. “Oh, I have heard the rumors. I hear there is a regular train running though your place, men and women,” Harvey said, bouncing the red squash ball eyeing Vincent with a sneer. “Speculate all you want but you are not invited,” he said, raising his racquet. “I hear the kinds of things that go on there could sink a political career,” Harvey said, finally serving the ball. “I heard you had a man killed in broad daylight,” Vincient said, returning the volley with unexpected speed.

Another noise. Something large is moving unseen in the dark. How many of my ancestors have lost their lives to the powerful creatures of the night to these exact same sounds? The whispers of these ancestors tell me to remain by the fire. Fire is safety, our shield against the natural world. But another call whispers inside me. Nahara struggled against the telekinetic hold but it was useless. Viktus’ mind was too strong. The thought of being completely alone with Viktus made his energy spike.
