I wanted to give all the people who asked, “so when are you going to give up on this writing thing?” proof that all my hard work was paying off. I wanted the credits I needed to join the union, so I could access the benefits of membership, which can include health benefits. I wanted to get the publishing credits a writer needs to apply for grants, residencies and exclusive retreats. I wanted to succeed. Since then, I have published many stories, paid-to-submit, paid-to-publish, free-to-submit, and unpaid-to-publish, and every single acceptance wasn’t about the money, it was the soothing hug I needed to squeeze out the fear of failure that sat (still) under my skin every day, itching to destroy my artistic dreams. It’s a fear that I know all writers and artists have. Will anyone ever read my work, see my art, connect with this dream I’ve had my entire life?

I just finished reading Jules Delorme, memoir, I HEARD A CROW BEFORE I WAS BORN and it is an incredible read. A collections of letters to loved ones passed and a self that still doesn’t feel deserving of love. It’s beautiful and heartbreaking.
